The overlap-tolerance stack and why it matters
When a sliding wardrobe shutter is fitted to a frame, there is always an overlap—the amount by which the glass extends beyond the frame edge to conceal the gap. On Bangalore sites, standard overlap is 8–12mm. This overlap is where the load begins to concentrate.

Glass thickness and the lacquer finish variable
Lacquered glass adds two complications. First, it adds weight. When the load exceeds the rating, the fluid does not restrict the flow sufficiently. The shutter closes too quickly. The damper warms. Over weeks and months, the seal inside the damper degrades. The fluid begins to weep past the seal. The damper loses its ability to restrict flow. The shutter falls open.
This is not a sudden failure. It is a creep failure. The shutter will close normally for the first few months. Then, one day, it will not close all the way. A week later, it will not close at all. Creep failure is preventable. It requires recalculating the hinge load at the specification stage, not at the handover stage.
Calculating the load: a working method for Bangalore sites

- Add a safety factor of 20%. The hinge rating should be at least 10.2 kg.
Most soft-close hinges in the 4–5 kg range will not meet this requirement. A hinge rated for 6–8 kg is necessary. On Bangalore sites, this often means specifying a heavier-duty hinge and accepting a slightly slower close speed, or reducing the overlap tolerance to 4mm and recalculating.
Specification and site coordination
The safest approach is to issue a single technical specification that locks all three variables: frame depth, glass thickness, and hinge rating. This specification should be issued to the fabricator, the glazier, and the hinge supplier before any orders are placed. On site, the fabricator should issue a shop drawing that shows the frame profile, the glass thickness, and the hinge centres. The glazier should confirm the glass weight and thickness. Does the hinge rating include soft-close, or is soft-close a separate load?
The hinge rating is the total load the hinge can carry. Soft-close is a mechanism within the hinge that restricts flow. The soft-close mechanism does not add weight to the load; it adds friction. This friction can increase the effective load on the hinge by 10–15% because the damper resists motion. A hinge rated for 5 kg with soft-close should be treated as if it is rated for 4.25 kg without soft-close. Always specify a hinge rated higher than your calculated load.
Can I use a single hinge on a narrow wardrobe shutter to save cost?
