A 2.5mm silicone joint in an HSR Layout pool mosaic, installed in June and inspected in March, shows hairline cracking along the grout line—not from structural movement, but from chemical shrinkage triggered by Bangalore's post-monsoon water pH spike. By April, when the Cauvery supply rises and chlorine dosing climbs to stabilise the water, that joint has already begun to fail. A 2mm epoxy-hybrid grout, by contrast, remains intact through the same cycle. The difference is not width alone; it is the material's response to the chemistry of Bangalore water in the months after the monsoon closes.

Bangalore's post-monsoon water chemistry and the pH-chlorine rebound

Between June and September, Bangalore's monsoon dilutes the Cauvery supply and lowers pH to 7.2–7.4. Chlorine demand rises because organic load increases. Pool operators maintain residual chlorine at 1.5–2.5 ppm and let pH drift slightly acidic to manage the load. This is stable water.

In October, as the monsoon closes, the supply hardens. TDS climbs from ~180 ppm to 280–320 ppm. By March and April, Bangalore's pre-summer demand pulls the Cauvery harder; the water becomes more alkaline. pH rises to 8.2–8.5. Chlorine is re-dosed to 2.5–3.5 ppm to kill the algae load triggered by warming. This is the rebound—a nine-month swing from acidic to highly alkaline, with sustained high chlorine.

Standard silicone grout was formulated for residential bathroom use: neutral pH, no chlorine exposure, low temperature swing. In a pool, silicone experiences cyclic osmotic stress. The alkaline water and high chlorine penetrate the joint, causing the polymer chains to cross-link unevenly. By month eight or nine, the silicone has lost elasticity. It shrinks. Hairline cracks appear along the grout line, particularly at the corners of tile joints where stress concentrates.

Why 2.5mm silicone fails and 2mm epoxy-hybrid holds

The width paradox

Intuition suggests a wider joint absorbs more movement. In fact, a wider silicone joint in a chemically aggressive environment fails faster. Here is why: silicone's failure mode in alkaline chlorinated water is not tensile cracking under load, but surface degradation and loss of adhesion at the tile-grout interface. A 2.5mm joint presents more surface area to the water. The chlorine and pH attack the silicone-tile bond over a longer perimeter. The joint fails not because it cannot flex, but because the material bond has degraded.

A 2mm epoxy-hybrid joint is narrower, but epoxy-hybrid formulations are chemically resistant to chlorine and alkaline pH up to 8.8. The material does not degrade under Bangalore's April water. The narrower joint also means less surface area exposed to the chemical load. Critically, epoxy-hybrid adheres to vitreous glass mosaic tile more aggressively than silicone does; the bond does not weaken under chlorine exposure. The joint holds its original width and elasticity through the post-monsoon cycle.

Tolerance and specification

A 2mm joint requires tighter tile layout tolerance: ±0.5mm across the run. A 2.5mm joint tolerates ±0.8mm. For a pool mosaic in Koramangala or Sarjapur Road, where site dimensions often shift by 5–10mm between RCP and as-built, the tighter tolerance of a 2mm joint demands either a shop drawing that accounts for the site variation, or on-site hand-fitting of individual tiles. This is not a drawback; it is the specification. Architects who commission a pool mosaic must decide: specify the wider, looser joint and accept the risk of post-monsoon failure, or specify the narrower, tighter joint and budget for precision fitting.

We recommend 2mm epoxy-hybrid for any pool mosaic in Bangalore. The material cost is marginally higher than silicone, but the labour cost of re-grouting a failed 2.5mm joint in year two is far higher.

Epoxy-hybrid chemistry and Bangalore's water profile

Epoxy-hybrid grout is a two-part polyurethane-epoxy blend. When mixed and applied, it cures through a chemical reaction that locks the polymer chains into a dense cross-linked network. This network resists osmotic penetration by water molecules. Chlorine ions do not migrate through the cured joint the way they do through silicone. The grout remains rigid and does not shrink.

The trade-off: epoxy-hybrid does not flex as much as silicone. Under thermal cycling (pool water warming from 28°C in April to 32°C in May), silicone can absorb 15–20% elongation; epoxy-hybrid manages 5–8%. For a pool mosaic, this is acceptable because the tile substrate (glass or ceramic) has very low thermal expansion—roughly 7–9 ppm/°C, far lower than concrete or stone. The joint does not need to flex much. What it needs to do is resist chemical attack, and epoxy-hybrid does that.

Cauvery water at TDS 280–320 ppm contains calcium, magnesium, chloride, and bicarbonate. At pH 8.5, bicarbonate is the dominant alkaline species. Epoxy-hybrid does not react with bicarbonate or chloride. Silicone, by contrast, is susceptible to saponification—a reaction between the siloxane backbone and alkaline species that breaks down the polymer. This is why silicone fails in pool grout by month eight or nine.

Site specification and handover protocol

Before the monsoon closes (by mid-September), the architect must specify the grout type on the RCP and in the material schedule. If the pool mosaic is already installed with 2.5mm silicone, do not wait for failure. Specify a grout replacement in October, after the water chemistry has stabilised but before the pH spike begins in earnest. The cost of re-grouting a small residential pool mosaic (say, 20–40 m²) is 8,000–15,000 rupees in labour and material. The cost of a failed joint that allows water ingress into the substrate is far higher.

At handover, inspect the grout line under magnification (10x loupe). The joint should be uniform in width, free of voids, and fully adhered to the tile edge. For a 2mm epoxy-hybrid joint, the tolerance is ±0.3mm. Any joint wider than 2.3mm or narrower than 1.7mm should be flagged and re-worked before sign-off. This is not pedantic; it is the difference between a mosaic that lasts twelve years and one that fails in year two.

Provide the client with a written protocol for post-handover maintenance: maintain pool pH between 7.2 and 7.8 (not 8.5), keep chlorine at 1.5–2.0 ppm during the monsoon, and increase to 2.5–3.0 ppm only in April and May when the water warms. This is not the atelier's responsibility, but it is the architect's responsibility to communicate to the client. A pool mosaic is only as durable as the water chemistry that surrounds it.

Material performance in Bangalore micromarkets

We have fitted pool mosaics across Bangalore's residential corridors—Whitefield, Indiranagar, Jayanagar, JP Nagar, BTM Layout, Bellandur, and Sarjapur Road. In every project where the architect specified 2.5mm silicone, we observed joint degradation by month nine. In projects where 2mm epoxy-hybrid was specified from the outset, the joint remains intact through four full post-monsoon cycles (four years). The pattern is consistent across all micromarkets, regardless of local water supplier variation, because the chemistry is driven by the Cauvery supply and Bangalore's seasonal climate.

Projects in Sadashivanagar and Hebbal, where groundwater supplements the municipal supply, show slightly faster silicone degradation because the groundwater is often harder (TDS 350+ ppm) and more alkaline (pH 8.0–8.3 year-round). In these areas, epoxy-hybrid is non-negotiable.

Commissioning pool mosaics: the specification window

A pool mosaic—whether a bespoke abstract gold-geometry design, a koi fish garden, or a lotus blossom composition—requires a lead time of 6–8 weeks from commission to installation. The grout specification must be locked in at the commission stage, not at installation. If the architect has not specified epoxy-hybrid by the time the mosaic leaves the atelier, the installer will default to silicone. By the time the pool fills and the monsoon closes, the decision is made—and the joint will fail by March.

The atelier can provide a material datasheet for epoxy-hybrid grout, a joint-tolerance drawing, and a curing protocol (epoxy-hybrid requires 48 hours of cure time before water exposure; silicone requires only 24 hours). Armed with this information, the architect can brief the contractor and the pool operator. There is no ambiguity. The joint either meets the 2mm ±0.3mm spec, or it does not.

Questions we get asked

Can we use 2mm silicone instead of 2mm epoxy-hybrid to save cost?

No. The width is irrelevant if the material fails. A 2mm silicone joint in a Bangalore pool will degrade by month nine, regardless of width. Epoxy-hybrid costs 15–20% more than silicone per linear metre, but the durability gain is four to five years. The cost per year is lower with epoxy-hybrid. Specify epoxy-hybrid.

Our pool is in Whitefield and uses a private water treatment system. Does the epoxy-hybrid spec still apply?

Yes. Even if the pool operator maintains pH 7.5 year-round and chlorine at 1.5 ppm, the Cauvery supply that tops up the pool (typically 10–15% of volume per month) introduces the seasonal chemistry. By April, the cumulative effect of the harder, more alkaline supply water will push the pool chemistry toward pH 8.2–8.4. Specify epoxy-hybrid. The private treatment system is an advantage, but it does not eliminate the seasonal rebound.

We specified 2.5mm silicone six months ago. The pool is filling next month. Can we change the grout spec now?

Yes, if the mosaic has not yet been grouted. Contact the atelier or the contractor immediately. If the mosaic is already grouted with silicone, plan a grout replacement in October (after the monsoon closes but before the pH spike). Do not wait for failure. A proactive re-grout in year one is far cheaper than a reactive repair in year two.

Is epoxy-hybrid suitable for outdoor shower walls or pool surrounds, or only for submerged tile?

Epoxy-hybrid is suitable for any wet area: submerged pool tile, shower walls, splash zones, and pool surrounds. The chemical resistance to chlorine and alkaline pH applies to all these contexts. However, for non-pool wet areas (bathrooms, showers) where chlorine is not present, silicone remains a valid choice. The post-monsoon pH spike affects pool water only, not municipal water in a bathroom. Specify epoxy-hybrid for pools; silicone is acceptable for bathrooms.

What is the warranty on a 2mm epoxy-hybrid grout joint in a pool mosaic?

We warrant the grout joint for five years against material failure (shrinkage, cracking, delamination) if the joint is installed to spec (2mm ±0.3mm), cured for 48 hours before water exposure, and the pool is maintained at pH 7.2–7.8 and chlorine 1.5–3.0 ppm. The warranty does not cover failure due to improper water chemistry (pH > 8.8 or chlorine > 4.0 ppm sustained). This is a material warranty, not a labour warranty. If re-grouting is required within five years due to material failure, the atelier will supply the grout at no cost; labour and site access are the client's responsibility.
