Frameless shower glass and the monsoon mineral-crystallization protocol: why water testing before specification changes your sealant edge-finish in a Koramangala ensuite
A frameless shower in Koramangala, fitted to a 2400 mm wall with a 10 mm low-iron panel and a brushed-brass spigot, will show mineral bloom within eight weeks if the incoming water TDS sits above 280 ppm and the edge finish is polished to a mirror. The architect who specified it did not test the water. The designer who selected the bevel did not ask. The result: a honed edge would have been the correct specification from the first shop drawing.
Why water hardness is a specification variable, not a site condition
Bangalore's Cauvery water supply carries dissolved minerals in the 200–300 ppm range depending on season and micromarket. Koramangala, HSR Layout, and Indiranagar sit in similar hydrogeological zones. During monsoon (June through September), TDS climbs as recharge patterns shift. By March, it can drop. Neither extreme is "bad" water—it is simply the material you are working with, the way you work with 25 mm granite or 12 mm toughened glass.
A polished edge on frameless glass—the kind that catches light and reads as "premium" in a showroom—is a microporous surface. Under a 40x magnifier, a polished bevel looks like a field of parallel scratches, each 0.5 to 2 microns wide. Mineral-laden water, when it dries on that surface, deposits calcium carbonate and magnesium silicate in those micro-channels. Over six to ten weeks, these deposits build into a visible white haze that no amount of squeegee discipline removes. The homeowner blames the glass. The designer blames the cleaner. Neither is wrong. The specification was.
The mineral-crystallization protocol: what to test and when
Water testing before shop drawing
Before you issue a frameless shower specification to the atelier, commission a water hardness test from a certified lab—NABL accreditation is standard. The test takes three days and costs 1500–2500 rupees. Specify TDS (total dissolved solids), calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, and pH. A pH below 6.8 is corrosive to sealant silicone; above 8.2, it accelerates mineral bloom on polished surfaces.
If TDS is 200–250 ppm and pH is neutral (6.8–7.2), a polished bevel is defensible. If TDS exceeds 280 ppm or pH swings above 8.0, specify a honed edge instead. A honed finish—achieved by hand with a 320-grit stone—creates a matte surface with no micro-channels. Mineral deposits sit on top of the glass, not in it. They are visible, but they are also removable with a soft cloth and a 50:50 white vinegar solution. The homeowner can maintain it. A polished edge cannot.
Seasonal variation and monsoon timing
If the project handover falls between June and August, test the water in July. If handover is November to March, test in February. The atelier will hold the shop drawing until the test results arrive. This is not delay; this is specification precision. The difference between a polished and honed edge is 45 minutes of labour and a different abrasive stone. The difference in client satisfaction over three years is substantial.
Edge finish and sealant strategy: the joint-tolerance layer
The edge of a frameless shower panel sits in a silicone sealant bead, typically 8–10 mm wide, with a tolerance of ±1.5 mm. The sealant does two things: it seals water, and it absorbs micro-movement as the glass expands and contracts with temperature and humidity swings. In Bangalore, summer to monsoon temperature swings can reach 12–15 degrees Celsius. The sealant stretches.
A polished edge, under sealant stress, can micro-fracture if the glass is not annealed to a precise thickness tolerance. A honed edge is more forgiving because the matte surface distributes stress across a broader area. If your water TDS is high and you insist on a polished bevel, the atelier will specify toughened glass (not annealed) and a polyurethane sealant (not silicone) to handle the mineral load and the micro-movement. This adds 8–12 percent to the cost and extends the lead time by two weeks. A honed edge, paired with standard silicone, costs less and ships on the original schedule.
Specification language: how to write it into the RCP and shop drawing
Do not write "frameless shower, premium finish." Write: "Frameless shower enclosure, 10 mm toughened low-iron glass, honed edge finish (320-grit), sealant silicone, joint tolerance ±1.5 mm, water TDS tested at 285 ppm, pH 7.4." Provide the test certificate to the atelier with the RCP. The atelier will confirm the edge specification in the first shop drawing. If the test shows TDS below 250 ppm, you can revert to polished if the client insists. But you will have made an informed choice, not a default one.
For projects in Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, or the newer tech-corridor enclaves, water hardness can vary significantly within a 2 km radius because groundwater sources are mixed. Test at the site, not at the municipal supply point. If the project is a multi-unit development, test at least two units—one on the top floor, one on the ground floor. Pressure and sediment vary vertically.
Common mistakes: polished bevels in high-TDS zones
In the past three years, we have retrofitted seven frameless showers in Koramangala and Indiranagar where the original specification was a polished edge and the water TDS was 290+ ppm. In each case, mineral bloom appeared by week eight. The fix: remove the panel, re-edge it to a honed finish (four-hour turnaround), and reinstall. Cost to the homeowner: 18,000–22,000 rupees. Cost to the architect's reputation: immeasurable. The original specification cost would have been zero—a honed edge is not more expensive than polished; it is simply different.
Another common oversight: specifying a polished edge without confirming the sealant type. If the atelier ships with a standard acrylic-latex sealant (common in budget frameless work), it will fail under high-mineral-load stress within 18 months. Silicone is non-negotiable for Bangalore water. Polyurethane is necessary if you insist on a polished edge in a high-TDS zone. Specify it explicitly in the schedule.
The atelier workflow: from test result to shop drawing
Once you provide the water test, the atelier will cross-reference it against the site dimensions, the RCP, and the hardware you have selected. If you are specifying low-iron clear glass with brass hardware, the mineral load becomes more visible because the glass is optically neutral—there is no tint to mask deposits. A bronze-tint panel with brass hardware will hide mineral bloom more effectively, which can be an aesthetic strategy if the water TDS is borderline (260–280 ppm) and you want to retain a polished edge. The atelier will note this trade-off in the shop drawing comments.
The first shop drawing will include: glass thickness, edge finish (polished or honed), sealant type and bead width, hardware finish, site dimensions to the millimetre, and a detail section showing the joint line. If the water test has changed the edge specification from what you initially sketched, the shop drawing will flag it. You approve, and the panel ships within seven working days.
Monsoon humidity and the squeegee reality
Bangalore's monsoon humidity (June to September) can reach 85–90 percent. Water sits longer on glass before it evaporates. Mineral deposits concentrate more densely. If the edge is polished, the bloom will be visible within five weeks instead of eight. If the edge is honed, the deposits are still there, but they are matte on matte—less visually jarring, and easier for the homeowner to maintain with a monthly vinegar rinse.
No squeegee protocol—not even a daily one—will prevent mineral bloom on a polished edge in high-TDS water. The homeowner cannot squeegee fast enough to stop water from entering the micro-channels of the polish. A honed edge eliminates this problem entirely because there are no channels to enter.
Questions we get asked
Can I polish the edge after installation if mineral bloom appears?
No. Polishing a honed edge after the panel is sealed in place risks destabilizing the sealant joint. The vibration and heat from the polishing wheel can crack the silicone bead. If mineral bloom appears on a honed edge, the solution is a vinegar rinse or a soft microfibre cloth—both are non-invasive. If bloom appears on a polished edge, the only remedy is removal and re-edging, which requires breaking the sealant and re-installing the panel.
Does low-iron glass show mineral deposits more than standard clear?
Yes. Low-iron glass has a neutral colour; standard clear glass has a faint green tint. On low-iron, white mineral deposits read as white. On standard clear, they read as slightly greenish-white because the glass tint modifies the visual contrast. If you are specifying low-iron for its optical clarity, you must commit to a honed edge in zones where TDS exceeds 270 ppm. The trade-off is worth it.
What if the water test shows TDS of 310 ppm—is a frameless shower still viable?
Yes, but with conditions. Specify toughened glass (not annealed), a honed edge, and a polyurethane sealant. Test the incoming water for pH as well; if it is below 6.5 or above 8.5, the sealant will degrade faster. In extreme cases (TDS above 350 ppm), consider a semi-frameless design with a top rail and a bottom track—the rail and track hide the edge, and mineral deposits are less visible. This is a design conversation, not a rejection of frameless.
How often should the homeowner clean a honed-edge frameless shower?
Weekly with a soft cloth and water. Monthly with a 50:50 white vinegar solution to dissolve mineral deposits. No abrasive cleaners, no steel wool, no acidic commercial cleaners (they etch the silicone sealant). A honed edge is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. The homeowner should understand this before handover.
If I test the water and TDS is 240 ppm, can I specify a polished edge without risk?
The risk is low but not zero. At 240 ppm, mineral bloom will appear within 12–16 weeks instead of 8. Monsoon timing matters: if handover is in May and the monsoon begins in June, bloom could appear by August. If handover is in October and the monsoon is ending, you have until January before conditions favour mineral concentration. A honed edge is still the safer specification, but a polished edge is defensible at 240 ppm. Document the water test in the project file and communicate the timeline to the client.
Specification as craft
The difference between a frameless shower that reads as flawless for five years and one that shows mineral bloom by month three is not the glass, the sealant, or the hardware. It is the specification—the decision to test the water, to read the results, and to choose the edge finish accordingly. This is the work of the atelier, but it begins with the architect or designer who understands that specification is not a checklist. It is a material conversation.
