This shallow winter angle and the steep summer arc create two distinct light regimes: north-facing walls receive diffuse, indirect light year-round; south-facing walls receive direct beam for 6–7 hours daily in summer, and glancing beam in winter.

Works well with mid-tone patterns like Coral Waves or Botanical Harmony.
  • High-gloss (85–95 gloss units): East-facing rooms only, or south-facing rooms with deep architectural overhangs (minimum 1.2m projection). The specular reflection is strong enough to preserve colour even under high-intensity light. Not recommended for Indiranagar, Koramangala, or other south-facing exposures without shading. Best for pale, high-key patterns where the gloss itself is part of the aesthetic, such as Deco Noir.

The hard-water TDS in Bangalore (typically 200–300 ppm from the Cauvery system) does not affect lacquered-glass colour, but it does affect the clarity of the gloss finish. A matte gloss is forgiving of mineral deposits; a high-gloss shows water spots immediately. Specify cleaning protocol and gloss level together.

The monsoon humidity factor: June–September in context

Bangalore's southwest monsoon (June–September) brings humidity to 80–90%, which affects how the eye perceives colour saturation. High humidity reduces the contrast between the lacquered surface and ambient light, making colours appear slightly more muted. This is not lacquer degradation; it is optical. In a north-facing room, this effect is barely perceptible because the light is already diffuse. In a south-facing room, the monsoon humidity can compound the mid-summer fade effect, making July and August particularly critical for client handover conversations. If a south-facing wardrobe is going to shift, it will be visible by mid-July.

The handover conversation: what to spec, what to communicate, what to measure

Before site fitting, the architect or designer should confirm three parameters with the client:

  1. Orientation and shading: Confirm the cardinal direction of the wardrobe wall, and note any external shading (adjacent buildings, deep eaves, large windows on the opposite wall that might bounce light). Measure the noon-hour lux level on the wall surface in June and again in December. If the June lux is above 600 on a clear day, specify semi-gloss or higher; if it is below 400, matte gloss is safe.
  2. Colour choice and gloss level alignment: Show the client the lacquered pattern in the actual gloss level specified, under the actual light conditions of the room. Do not show a matte sample under studio lights and then install high-gloss on site. The colour will appear to have shifted, and the client will believe the lacquer has faded.
  3. Seasonal expectation: Explain that the colour may appear slightly more saturated in March, September, and December, and slightly more muted in June–August. This is normal and reversible; it is the sun's angle, not the material. Set this expectation in writing before handover.

Does lacquered glass fade in direct sunlight?

Lacquered glass does not fade chemically under UV exposure in the way that paint or fabric does. The colour shift you observe in a south-facing wardrobe during summer is perceptual—the high-intensity light overwhelms the eye's ability to discern saturation. The colour returns to its original appearance when the light angle or intensity changes (in autumn or on overcast days). The lacquer itself is stable. However, if a wardrobe is exposed to sustained direct sunlight without any shading, and the gloss level is too low for that light intensity, the colour will appear washed out for several months each year. This is why gloss-level specification matters.

Should I always specify matte gloss to be safe?

No. Matte gloss is the right choice for north-facing rooms and deep, saturated colours. For east- or west-facing rooms, or for pale, high-key patterns, a semi-gloss or high-gloss finish will perform better because it preserves visual contrast. A matte finish in a bright, south-facing room will appear flat and may actually look more washed out than a semi-gloss, because the lack of specular reflection removes the visual anchor that helps the eye perceive colour saturation. Specify gloss level to match both the room's light regime and the colour you are trying to preserve.

Can I change the gloss level after the wardrobe is fitted?

No. The gloss level is built into the lacquered finish during the commissioning process. It cannot be altered after fitting without re-lacquering the entire shutter, which is not practical. This is why the gloss-level choice must be made during the design phase, not after handover. If a client is unhappy with the colour appearance on site, the remedy is either to re-spec the wardrobe with a different gloss level (a new fitting), or to address the room's light conditions—add external shading, adjust interior lighting, or accept the seasonal variation as normal.

Does Bangalore's hard water affect lacquered glass?

Hard water (TDS 200–300 ppm) leaves mineral deposits on any glossy surface, and these deposits can make the colour appear slightly duller over time. The lacquer itself is not affected. Regular cleaning with distilled water and a soft cloth removes deposits and restores the original appearance. Specify a matte gloss if the client is unlikely to maintain regular cleaning; specify a semi-gloss or high-gloss only if the client is willing to clean the wardrobe monthly. This should be part of the handover conversation.

What is the difference between a lacquered-glass wardrobe and a painted-glass wardrobe?

Lacquered glass has the colour applied to the back surface of the glass, sealed with a protective lacquer layer, and then the glass is tempered. The colour is protected by the glass itself, and the gloss level is part of the lacquer finish. A painted-glass wardrobe has the colour applied to the front surface, which exposes the paint to dust, moisture, and handling.
