A lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in a Bellandur master bedroom closes smoothly for six months, then begins to drift open by millimetres each week. The soft-close hinge is not broken—it is creeping. The hydraulic damper, rated for 4.5 kilograms of load, has absorbed a cumulative overlap tolerance stack of 5.2mm, pushing the door weight beyond its threshold. By the time the homeowner notices the drift, the hinge has already begun to fail in a way that no site adjustment can fully reverse.
This is not a defect in the hinge itself. It is a specification error—one that occurs when the architect or designer does not account for how overlap tolerance compounds across the hinge load rating on a retrofit installation.
Why soft-close hinges creep under overlap tolerance stack
A soft-close hinge operates on hydraulic damping. As the door closes, oil is forced through a metering valve, slowing the shutter's descent. The hinge is rated for a maximum load—typically 4 to 5 kilograms for residential lacquered-glass shutters. This rating assumes a specific door weight and a specific overlap geometry.
Overlap tolerance is the clearance between the shutter edge and the frame when the door is closed. On a retrofit wardrobe—particularly in older Bellandur or Indiranagar properties where wall tolerances often exceed ±3mm—this clearance is not fixed. The architect specifies a nominal overlap, say 2mm. But the as-built wall dimensions, the frame installation tolerance, and the shutter's own manufacturing tolerance can stack to create a real-world overlap of 2.0mm plus 1.5mm (wall) plus 1.2mm (frame) plus 0.5mm (shutter edge tolerance). That is 5.2mm of accumulated clearance.
When overlap increases, the door sits further from the hinge pivot. The lever arm lengthens. The torque on the hinge increases. A 5.2mm stack on a 450mm-tall shutter adds approximately 0.8 kilograms of effective load to the hinge. The hinge, rated for 4.5kg, is now operating at 5.3kg. The hydraulic damper begins to creep.
The 4.5mm threshold and why it matters on Bangalore retrofits
Where the threshold lives
Soft-close hinges for residential wardrobe shutters operate reliably when the overlap tolerance stack remains below 4.5mm. Beyond this point, the hydraulic damper enters a zone where creep becomes measurable within weeks, not months. This is not a failure point—the hinge will continue to function—but it is a degradation threshold. The door will close, but it will not hold closed. It will drift open by 5mm to 10mm per week.
On a Bangalore retrofit, especially in properties built in the 1990s or early 2000s, wall tolerances routinely exceed ±2mm. Monsoon humidity (June to September) also causes minor dimensional shifts in timber frames and plasterboard finishes. A retrofit specification that does not account for this stack is a specification that will require site adjustment within six months.
How to specify below the threshold
To keep overlap tolerance stack below 4.5mm, work backwards from the hinge rating. Assume a 4kg effective load budget. Deduct the shutter's actual weight (typically 3.5kg for a 450mm × 1200mm lacquered-glass shutter). That leaves 0.5kg of tolerance headroom. On a 450mm shutter height, this translates to approximately 3.5mm of permissible overlap stack.
Specify the nominal overlap at 1.5mm, not 2mm. Require the frame installer to hold wall tolerances to ±1mm, not ±2mm. Specify the shutter edge tolerance to ±0.5mm. This gives you: 1.5 + 1.0 + 1.0 + 0.5 = 4.0mm. You are below threshold with margin.
On retrofits in HSR Layout, Koramangala, or Indiranagar, where wall finishes are often uneven, consider a site-fitted frame rather than a factory-assembled frame. The cost is 12 to 15 percent higher, but it eliminates frame tolerance from the stack equation. The frame is installed to the wall, then the shutter is fitted to the frame on site. Overlap tolerance is now controlled solely by the shutter edge tolerance and the frame-to-wall fit.
Post-installation adjustment and why it is non-negotiable
Even with careful specification, a soft-close wardrobe shutter must be adjusted on site after installation. The hinge has internal adjustment screws that allow you to alter the closing speed and the final-close force. These are not meant to correct overlap tolerance—they cannot—but they can compensate for minor creep in the first weeks after installation.
On handover, the architect or designer should specify that the installer perform a soft-close check at week two and week eight. At week two, the shutter should close smoothly and hold closed for at least 10 seconds. At week eight, after monsoon humidity has stabilized the timber frame, the shutter should still hold closed. If drift is observed, the hinge closing-force adjustment should be increased by half a turn. This is not a permanent fix—if the overlap stack is genuinely above 4.5mm, the drift will resume—but it gives the homeowner an additional three to four months before creep becomes visible.
The adjustment procedure must be documented in the handover manual. Many Bangalore projects hand over the wardrobe without this instruction, leaving the homeowner to discover the drift weeks later. By then, the hinge has already entered a permanent creep state, and the only remedy is hinge replacement.
Lacquered-glass shutters and the weight-tolerance interaction
Lacquered glass—the finish specified for Cherry Bloom and Deco Noir wardrobe patterns—adds approximately 200 to 250 grams per square metre compared to clear annealed glass. On a 450mm × 1200mm shutter, this is an additional 108 to 135 grams. For a single shutter, this is negligible. For a three-shutter configuration (common in Whitefield and Sadashivanagar master bedrooms), the cumulative weight is 324 to 405 grams, which can push a dual-hinge setup into the creep zone if the overlap stack is already high.
When specifying lacquered-glass shutters on a retrofit wardrobe with tight hinges, confirm the hinge load rating with the hinge manufacturer. A 4kg-rated hinge paired with a three-shutter lacquered configuration may require overlap tolerance to be held to 3.5mm, not 4.5mm. This is a calculation that must happen at the specification stage, not on site.
Cauvery water hardness and frame corrosion: a secondary consideration
Bangalore's Cauvery water has a TDS of approximately 200 to 300 ppm—harder than many Indian cities, but not extreme. However, in bathrooms adjacent to wardrobes (common in Jayanagar and JP Nagar properties), water vapour can reach the frame and hinge. Zinc-plated hinges will develop white corrosion within 18 months if not sealed. Stainless-steel hinges (304 grade) are worth the 8 to 10 percent cost premium on any wardrobe within 1.5 metres of a bathroom. Corrosion does not directly cause creep, but it can increase friction in the hinge pivot, making the soft-close damper work harder and accelerating creep onset.

If a soft-close hinge is creeping, can we adjust it on site to stop the drift?
Partially. The hinge closing-force adjustment can be increased, which will slow the drift temporarily. But if the overlap tolerance stack is genuinely above 4.5mm, the adjustment will only buy three to four months. The permanent fix is to re-hang the shutter with a tighter overlap, which requires the frame to be shimmed or the shutter edge to be re-ground. This is an expensive retrofit and should have been avoided at specification.
What is the difference between a 4kg and a 5kg soft-close hinge?
A 5kg hinge can support a heavier door, but it does not have a lower creep threshold. The creep threshold is determined by the hydraulic damper design, not the load rating. A 5kg hinge will creep at a different point than a 4kg hinge, but both will creep if the overlap tolerance stack exceeds approximately 4.5mm relative to their respective load ratings. The 5kg hinge is useful when the door itself is heavier (e.g., a lacquered-glass shutter with a timber core), not when you want to accommodate loose tolerances.
Why does monsoon humidity affect soft-close creep?
It does not directly. But monsoon humidity (June to September) causes timber frames and plasterboard to swell slightly, which can increase the overlap tolerance by 0.5 to 1mm. If the overlap stack was already at 4.2mm before monsoon, it may rise to 4.7mm or 5.0mm during the wet season. Creep becomes visible during or immediately after monsoon. This is why post-installation adjustment at week eight is important—it captures the monsoon-induced shift.
Should we specify a 10mm or 12mm overlap instead of 1.5mm to make the wardrobe look more finished?
No. Overlap is not an aesthetic parameter—it is a load parameter. A 10mm overlap will add approximately 1.8 kilograms of effective load to a 450mm shutter hinge, pushing a 4.5kg hinge well into creep. The wardrobe will look finished for three months, then begin to drift. Overlap should be specified at the minimum that allows the shutter to close without binding (typically 1.5mm to 2.0mm). If the wardrobe's visual finish is a concern, the frame detail—the reveal, the edge profile, the paint colour—is where refinement lives, not in the overlap tolerance.
Can we use a mechanical soft-close (friction-based) instead of hydraulic to avoid creep?
Mechanical soft-close mechanisms do not creep in the way hydraulic dampers do, but they also do not provide true soft-close. They are friction brakes that slow the door's descent, but they require manual control to prevent the door from slamming in the final 50mm. Hydraulic dampers are the standard for residential wardrobe shutters because they provide full-stroke damping. If creep is a concern, the answer is tighter tolerance specification and site adjustment, not a switch to mechanical brakes.
