A wardrobe in a south-facing Koramangala bedroom reads one colour in January and another in June. Not because the glass fades—lacquered glass doesn't fade the way paint does—but because the angle and intensity of Bangalore's seasonal light changes how the surface reflects and absorbs colour. A matte gloss (85 GU, measured at 60°) holds saturation across the year. A satin gloss (40–50 GU) begins to lose depth by May and reads noticeably flatter by mid-monsoon. The difference isn't subtle. It's the difference between specifying correctly and discovering the error at handover.

Why gloss level matters more than paint spec for lacquered glass

Lacquered glass is not paint. Paint sits on a substrate and absorbs light into its binder. Lacquered glass is a layer of polyester or polyurethane cured onto 6mm or 8mm float glass. The lacquer itself is transparent. Colour comes from pigment suspended in that lacquer. How that pigment reflects light—and how much light the surface returns to the eye—is entirely governed by gloss level, not by pigment choice.

In Bangalore, where the sun angle shifts from 80° in June to 42° in December, a low-gloss surface (30–40 GU) scatters light broadly. A high-gloss surface (85+ GU) returns light at a sharper angle. The lower the gloss, the more the surface reads as matte and diffuse. The higher the gloss, the more the colour appears saturated and directional. A satin-gloss wardrobe that looks rich in the soft light of a north-facing room in January can look washed out in the direct south-facing light of June because the scattered light is being overpowered by ambient brightness.

The seasonal light problem in Bangalore's south-facing bedrooms

Bangalore's monsoon humidity (June to September, often 70–85% RH) also affects perception. High humidity softens the distinction between gloss levels because moisture on the glass surface acts as a diffuser. But the real shift happens in the dry season, May to early June, when the sun is high and the air is clear. This is when a satin-gloss wardrobe will appear to lose colour depth.

A matte gloss (85 GU) maintains visual saturation because it reflects enough light back to the eye to keep the colour reading consistent, regardless of angle. It's not about making the surface shinier—it's about ensuring the pigment is visible at all angles of incidence.

How to write gloss level into your shop drawing

The mistake most architects make is to specify colour only. "Emerald green lacquered glass" or "charcoal matte finish" tells the fabricator what colour you want, but not how that colour should behave under light. The fabricator then chooses a gloss level based on what they have in stock or what is easiest to produce. This is where the mismatch happens.

Your shop drawing should include a gloss-level specification alongside the colour code. Use GU (gloss units, measured at 60° geometry per ASTM D523) as the standard. Write it like this:

  • Wardrobe sliding doors: 6mm lacquered glass, colour code [RAL/NCS/Pantone], gloss level 85 GU minimum
  • Wardrobe frame: 8mm lacquered glass, colour code [code], gloss level 40 GU

Do not write "matte" or "satin" or "gloss" alone. These terms are subjective. A fabricator's "satin" might be 35 GU or 55 GU depending on their process. GU is measurable. It's auditable. It goes into the as-built documentation.

Approval samples and seasonal light testing

When you request a colour approval sample, ask for it in the gloss level you are specifying. A 2D sample card in 85 GU will look different from a 3D mock-up in 40 GU, even if the colour code is identical. If the client approves a sample in satin gloss and you specify matte gloss on the shop drawing, you will have a dispute at handover.

If the bedroom is south-facing, ask to see the sample in south-facing daylight, not under artificial light in the showroom. The difference is material. A charcoal wardrobe that reads rich under tungsten light can look grey under the direct sun of a Koramangala afternoon.

Lacquered glass and Bangalore's hard water: a secondary consideration

Bangalore's Cauvery water carries a TDS of approximately 200–300 ppm, which is moderately hard. Mineral deposits on lacquered glass can accumulate over time, particularly on lower-gloss surfaces where water beads less efficiently. A matte gloss (85 GU) sheds water slightly better than a satin gloss (40–50 GU) because the surface is less porous. This is a minor factor in the colour-shift equation, but it's worth noting in your specification notes to the client: "Specify matte gloss for improved water shedding and colour consistency in high-humidity zones."

For wardrobes in bathrooms or near windows with condensation risk, 85 GU is the safer choice. For bedrooms, 85 GU is the choice if you want the colour to read consistently across seasons.

Real-world examples from Bangalore projects

A Sadashivanagar residence specified a wardrobe in Emerald Feather pattern, 40 GU satin gloss, for a south-facing bedroom. The colour approval sample was viewed indoors under soft light. At handover in May, the client observed that the wardrobe looked "pale and washed out" compared to the sample. The issue was not the colour—it was the gloss level interacting with the high-angle May sun. The wardrobe was rebuilt in 85 GU. The colour then matched the approval sample under natural light.

A Jayanagar project specified Bronze Lattice, 85 GU, for a north-facing bedroom. The wardrobe maintained colour consistency from January through September because the north-facing orientation meant no direct sun angle shift. The higher gloss level was not necessary here, but it did not cause problems either. The client was satisfied.

An Indiranagar residence specified Deco Noir pattern, 50 GU satin gloss, for a west-facing wardrobe. The afternoon sun (May through August) caused the charcoal to read as grey-brown rather than true charcoal. The specification should have been 85 GU. This is a case where the architect did not account for the seasonal light shift and paid for a revision.

Specifying for mixed-light environments

Not all wardrobes face one direction. A bedroom in Whitefield with windows on two walls and a wardrobe on a third wall will receive mixed light. In this case, specify a compromise: 75–80 GU. This gloss level holds colour saturation under most angles while avoiding the ultra-reflective appearance of 90+ GU, which can look plastic in soft light.

If the wardrobe is in a dressing room with controlled artificial light only, gloss level is less critical. You can specify 40–50 GU without risk of seasonal colour shift because the light source is constant. But if there is any natural window in the room, even a small one, treat it as a south-facing exposure and specify accordingly.

Joint tolerance and gloss consistency across panels

When lacquered-glass panels are fitted side by side, the gloss level must be consistent across all panels to the millimetre. A variation of 5 GU between adjacent panels will be visible as a line where they meet. This is not a defect—it's a result of inconsistent curing or inconsistent application. Specify in your shop drawing: "Gloss level variance between panels not to exceed 3 GU." This goes into the quality check before dispatch.

The fabricator will measure gloss on at least three points per panel using a portable gloss meter. This data should be included in the handover documentation. If you have a dispute about colour after installation, gloss-level readings are objective evidence.

Questions we get asked

Can I change gloss level after the wardrobe is installed?

No. Gloss level is baked into the lacquer during curing. It cannot be sanded or polished to a different finish without damaging the colour layer. If the gloss level is wrong, the panel must be replaced. This is why it must be correct in the shop drawing, before fabrication begins.

Does matte gloss (85 GU) show fingerprints more than satin gloss?

Matte gloss shows fingerprints less visibly because the diffuse surface scatters light and obscures oil marks. Satin gloss, with its semi-reflective surface, shows fingerprints more clearly. If fingerprint visibility is a concern, specify 85 GU and recommend a microfibre cloth for cleaning. Lacquered glass does not require special maintenance—water and a soft cloth are sufficient.

What if the client approves a colour sample in one gloss level but the specification calls for another?

This is a change order. The client must approve the new gloss level in a fresh sample before the shop drawing is finalized. Do not proceed to fabrication without this written approval. A one-line email from the client saying "looks good" is not sufficient. Request a formal approval email that references the gloss level by GU number.

Does gloss level affect the durability or warranty of lacquered glass?

No. A 40 GU and an 85 GU lacquered-glass panel will have the same durability and the same warranty. Gloss level is a surface property that affects light reflection, not structural integrity. The warranty covers delamination, discolouration, and edge chipping—not gloss level fade.

Can I specify different gloss levels for the frame and the doors of the same wardrobe?

Yes. It is common to specify a higher gloss (85 GU) for the doors and a lower gloss (40–50 GU) for the frame to create visual separation. The frame recedes visually when it is matte, and the doors advance when they are glossy. This is a valid design choice. Make sure both gloss levels are stated separately in the shop drawing, and that the client approves samples of both.

Commissioning your wardrobe with the right gloss level

Talk to the atelier with your site dimensions, orientation, and light conditions. Bring a photograph of the bedroom taken at the time of day when the wardrobe will be most visible. If it is a south-facing room, mention this explicitly. The atelier will recommend a gloss level and send you a sample in that finish. Approve the sample in natural light, in the actual room if possible. Write the gloss level into your shop drawing before you sign off on colour. This one step—naming gloss level by GU, not by feel—is the difference between a wardrobe that reads consistently and one that shifts with the seasons.
