The sun is 45 degrees above the horizon, the room temperature has climbed to 32°C, and the architect's specification sheet sits half-finished on the desk: 6mm bronze tinted glass or 8mm clear? The choice is not aesthetic. It is a trade-off between solar heat gain coefficient and visible light transmission—two numbers that pull in opposite directions, and Bangalore's seasonal geometry makes the tension real.

The west-facing problem in Bangalore's afternoon

A pergola on the west face of a Bangalore home—whether in Sarjapur, Whitefield, or Indiranagar—receives direct sun for four to five hours in the afternoon, from roughly 1 pm to 5:30 pm. During April and May, that sun arrives at a steep angle; in November and December, it comes in lower and longer. The courtyard or covered outdoor room below must manage both heat and glare while preserving usable daylight.

The tension is this: tinted glass (bronze, grey, green) reduces solar heat gain and glare. Clear glass transmits more visible light but admits more infrared energy. On paper, bronze wins for cooling. Reading SHGC and VLT on your spec sheet

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) measures the fraction of visible light (400–700 nm wavelength) that passes through the glass. A higher VLT means a brighter interior without artificial light.

A typical 6mm bronze-tinted glass carries an SHGC of 0.40–0.48 and a VLT of 0.45–0.55. A standard 8mm clear glass sits at SHGC 0.86 and VLT 0.88. The bronze cuts solar gain by nearly half. The clear transmits 60% more visible light. Neither is wrong; the choice depends on the room's use and Bangalore's seasonal rhythm.

Seasonal sun angles and the Bangalore courtyard

When to specify 6mm bronze: heat control as the priority

Specify 6mm bronze tinted glass when the courtyard is a high-traffic summer space, when air-conditioning costs are a concern, or when glare would disrupt work or rest. A home office with a west-facing outlook, a dining courtyard in Sarjapur that hosts afternoon meals, or a covered lounge in JP Nagar where residents gather in late afternoon—these are spaces where the SHGC advantage of bronze (0.40–0.48 vs. 0.86 for clear) justifies the loss of 30–40% of visible light.

When to specify 8mm clear: daylighting and visual connection as the priority

Specify 8mm clear glass when the courtyard is primarily a visual and spatial extension of the interior—when the goal is to feel connected to the sky and outdoor air without sacrificing daylight quality. A living room with a west-facing pergola in Koramangala, a bedroom courtyard in Indiranagar, or a kitchen eating area in Sadashivanagar—spaces where the view matters and occupancy is light in summer—benefit from clear glass.

The 8mm thickness (rather than 6mm) is important here. It adds structural rigidity and reduces the visual distortion of thinner glass, which matters when the glass is a visual anchor of the space. The VLT of 0.88 means the afternoon light feels natural and unfiltered. On monsoon days, the brightness difference between clear and bronze becomes stark: clear glass will feel like an extension of daylight; bronze will feel like a tint.

This approach—clear glass plus adaptive shading—is increasingly specified in Bangalore projects where the courtyard is a shared family space with variable occupancy. It costs more upfront but offers flexibility that tinted glass alone cannot match.

Material and durability notes for Bangalore's water

Bangalore's water from the Cauvery has a TDS of 200–300 ppm—moderately hard, with mineral deposits that settle on glass over time. But if you add motorised shading to the 6mm bronze spec, the total cost converges. Clear glass plus shading and tinted glass alone are often the same price.

Can we use 6mm clear instead of 8mm clear to save cost?

Structurally, yes, if the span is short (under 2m) and the wind load is low. Optically, 6mm clear has slightly lower VLT (0.85 vs. 0.88) and will show more visible distortion in the glass plane, especially if the panel is large. For a pergola where the glass is a visual anchor, 8mm is worth the extra cost. For a small courtyard with a 1.5m overhang, 6mm clear is acceptable.

What if we use grey tinted glass instead of bronze?

Grey has a lower SHGC (0.35–0.42) than bronze and a lower VLT (0.40–0.50), so it blocks both heat and light equally. It is neutral in colour, without the warm cast of bronze. For a courtyard where aesthetics matter and the client wants the tint to be invisible, grey is a good choice. But it dims the room more than bronze, so confirm daylighting expectations with the client. Green tinted glass is less common in Bangalore pergolas but offers a middle ground: SHGC of 0.45–0.50, VLT of 0.55–0.65, and a subtle colour that some architects prefer.

How often does the pergola glass need cleaning in Bangalore?

Without a hydrophobic coating, every 2–3 months, especially during monsoon when mineral-rich rainwater dries on the underside. With a coating, every 6–8 months. Tinted glass shows water spots sooner than clear glass, so maintenance intervals are shorter. Budget for professional cleaning twice a year if the pergola is over a high-traffic space.

Can we retrofit shading to a pergola that was already specified in bronze?

Yes, but it is more expensive and visually awkward than designing it in from the start. Commissioning your pergola
