A completed lap pool in Kalyan Nagar, finished in March, showed visible grout-line degradation by mid-May—not from poor installation, but from a specification that ignored how Bangalore's post-monsoon water chemistry interacts with grout width. The mosaic tiles themselves were sound. The substrate was level. The problem was the joint: 3mm silicone grout, which seemed conservative, but failed because it could not accommodate the pH and chlorine rebound that hits every Bangalore residential pool in April and May, after the monsoon humidity cycle and before the dry season stabilises.

Cauvery water in Bangalore carries a TDS of approximately 200–300 ppm. When you lose water to evaporation during the dry season without proportional top-up, the minerals concentrate. Silicone grout, whether plain or hybrid, works by allowing micro-movement. A 3mm joint can absorb approximately 0.3–0.5mm of dimensional change before it begins to stress the adhesive bond at the grout-tile interface. A 2mm joint, by contrast, operates within a tighter tolerance band—roughly 0.15–0.25mm—which means it experiences proportionally less stress at the same thermal or chemical expansion.

The Kalyan Nagar pool used 3mm silicone. At the tile-grout interface, when pH alkalinity pushed the silicone to expand slightly (silicones swell under high-pH conditions), the wider joint allowed the grout to move further before the tile edge began to separate. This separation created a micro-gap. Water—now at pH 7.8 and 4 ppm chlorine—entered that gap. Silicone is permeable to water vapour; it is not impermeable to liquid water under sustained alkaline conditions.

Epoxy-hybrid grout at 2mm: why the specification worked

An epoxy-hybrid grout (typically 70% epoxy, 30% urethane or polyurethane modifier) has lower permeability than pure silicone and higher modulus—meaning it resists expansion more firmly. At 2mm width, this grout is forced to operate within its elastic limit. It does not move much; it does not have room to. When pH and chlorine spike, the grout expands perhaps 0.1–0.15mm. The tile edge does not separate. The joint line remains sealed to the millimetre.

Epoxy-hybrid is also less susceptible to alkaline swelling than silicone. Laboratory testing (ASTM D2240, Shore A hardness) shows that epoxy-hybrid grouts maintain hardness within 2–3 points across pH 6.5 to 8.0, whereas silicone grouts can soften by 5–8 points in the same range. Real-world handover: the Kalyan Nagar case

The lap pool in Kalyan Nagar was fitted with a coral-reef mosaic design across the pool floor and feature wall. The tiles are 15mm soda-lime glass, set on a polyurethane-modified cementitious adhesive. The grout specification was 3mm silicone, white, to contrast with the blue and coral tile palette.

At handover (March), the joint lines were clean and even. By May, the pool operator reported visible separation at several tile edges—not complete failure, but a hairline gap perhaps 0.5mm wide, visible to the eye. The grout itself had not cracked; rather, it had pulled away from the tile edge. Water had begun to discolour the substrate beneath.

Material choice: when to use silicone, when epoxy-hybrid

Silicone grout has one advantage that epoxy-hybrid does not: it remains flexible indefinitely. If your pool substrate is known to move—for instance, if it sits on a clay soil with seasonal shrink-swell—silicone's flexibility is valuable. Epoxy-hybrid, being stiffer, can crack if the substrate moves more than 0.3mm annually.

But in most Bangalore residential pools, the substrate is stable. The movement is chemical, not structural. In those cases, epoxy-hybrid's impermeability and resistance to alkaline swelling make it the better choice, even if the initial cost is 15–20% higher.

For aesthetic reasons, some architects prefer silicone because it can be applied with a tighter, more uniform line. Epoxy-hybrid, being thicker in consistency, can look slightly wider even when the joint width is identical. This is not standard; it requires a craftsperson, not a tiler.

Can I use a wider joint (4mm or 5mm) if I use epoxy-hybrid grout instead of silicone?

Not in a Bangalore residential pool. A 4mm joint, even with epoxy-hybrid, will accumulate calcium and mineral deposits from the hard water, and cleaning becomes difficult without damaging the grout. The wider the joint, the more surface area for biofilm and algae growth. Stick to 2mm as the maximum. Wider joints are appropriate only in commercial pools with active chemical management and weekly professional cleaning.

Why does the pool operator's testing frequency matter for my grout specification?

If the operator tests water chemistry only monthly, they will miss the April pH spike entirely. By the time they test in May, pH may have been at 8.0 or higher for two weeks. If I re-grout a pool every 5 years with silicone, is that acceptable maintenance or a design failure?

It is acceptable maintenance if the client understands it and budgets for it. But it is a design choice, not a necessity. A 2mm epoxy-hybrid joint, specified correctly, will not require re-grouting for 10–12 years in a residential pool. The upfront cost difference (roughly 8–12% of the mosaic budget) is recovered in reduced maintenance labour over the life of the pool. What happens if I ignore this and specify 3mm silicone anyway?

Your mosaic will be beautiful at handover. By month 14, you will receive a call from the owner about visible grout separation.
