Walk a Bangalore pool deck in early April and you will see hairline cracks radiating from the joint lines of a mosaic laid eighteen months prior. The grout looks intact to the naked eye. But the joint line has begun to weep — water seeps at the edge where tile meets grout, and by June monsoon, that hairline becomes a channel. This is not installation failure. This is Bangalore's water chemistry at work, and it begins in March.

The seasonal pH swing and chlorine rebound

Bangalore's municipal water supply, drawn from Cauvery, carries a TDS of approximately 200–300 ppm. That hardness is constant. What changes is pH. Between October and February, when the city is cool and dry, pool water stabilises at pH 7.2 to 7.4. By March — as temperatures climb and chlorine demand rises — the pH rebounds to 8.2 to 8.5. This 0.8-point swing is not unusual for Indian cities, but it is aggressive enough to degrade epoxy-hybrid grout.

The mechanism is simple. Epoxy-hybrid grout relies on a polyurethane or epoxy resin matrix to bind the cement and silica filler. At pH 7.4, this matrix is stable. At pH 8.5, the alkaline environment begins to soften the resin micro-structure. The grout does not dissolve. Instead, it loses tensile strength at the joint edge — the interface where tile, grout, and water meet. By late March, when chlorine rebound peaks, the joint line has already been compromised for two to three weeks.

Why standard epoxy-hybrid fails before pure epoxy

The hybrid formula weakness

Epoxy-hybrid grout was designed for interior walls and light-duty floors. It combines epoxy resin (which is pH-stable to 9.0) with polyurethane (which softens above pH 8.0). This blend reduces cost and improves workability on site. For a residential bathroom in Koramangala or Indiranagar, it performs adequately. For a chlorinated pool in Bangalore's seasonal cycle, it does not.

Pure epoxy grout — the two-part system with no polyurethane — remains stable to pH 9.5 and resists chlorine attack at any seasonal pH. The trade-off is application difficulty: pure epoxy must be mixed and applied within a narrow window, and joint lines must be tooled to exact tolerance before the resin sets. Most site teams in Bangalore are not equipped for this. Epoxy-hybrid is specified because it is forgiving. That forgiveness costs you in year two.

The joint-line inspection window

Between late February and mid-March, the joint lines of a pool mosaic are at their most vulnerable. The grout has absorbed water from the pool and the monsoon humidity still lingers in the air. pH is rising. Chlorine residual is climbing. A site inspection at this moment will reveal hairline separation — a visible gap of 0.3 to 0.8 mm between tile and grout at the joint edge. This is the signal to re-seal before the April heat and May chlorine spike complete the failure.

Specification and commissioning for Bangalore's climate

The solution is not to avoid epoxy-hybrid grout. It is to specify the right grout for the exposure and to plan for seasonal re-sealing from the outset.

For new commissions

If you are specifying a pool mosaic — whether it is our Coral Reef Magic or the Abstract Gold Geometry — insist on pure epoxy grout for all joint lines that will be submerged or subject to splash. The specification should read: "Two-part epoxy grout, unfilled, mixed on-site, applied to joint lines not exceeding 2 mm width, tooled to 0.5 mm depth below tile face, cured for 72 hours before water exposure." The cost premium over epoxy-hybrid is 12–18 percent. The re-seal labour you avoid in year two is worth 40 percent of the original grout cost.

For mosaic designs with decorative joint lines — such as the Lotus Blossom Serenity or Koi Fish Garden — specify a polyurethane sealant applied over the grout once the epoxy has cured. This sealant sits on the surface and does not replace the grout, but it provides a second barrier against pH fluctuation and chlorine infiltration. Reapply every 18 months, typically in late January when pool chemistry is most stable.

For existing installations

If your project has epoxy-hybrid grout already in place, establish a seasonal inspection protocol. Schedule a site visit in late February or early March. Bring a jeweller's loupe and a moisture meter. Examine the joint lines under raking light — you are looking for hairline cracks or a visible gap at the tile edge. If you see separation, commission a re-seal immediately. Do not wait for the monsoon.

The re-seal process is straightforward: clean the joint line with a soft brush and distilled water, allow 48 hours to dry, apply a two-part polyurethane sealant to a depth of 1.5 mm, and cure for 72 hours. The labour cost is 40–60 percent of new grout installation. The prevention of water ingress and sub-tile mould is worth the expense.

Material tolerance and site dimensions

When you commission a pool mosaic from the atelier, we provide a shop drawing that specifies joint width to the millimetre. For Bangalore pools, we recommend a joint width of 1.8 to 2.2 mm. This width is wide enough to accommodate the seasonal expansion of the tile (granite and glass both expand 0.05–0.08 mm per metre in the April heat) and narrow enough that the grout does not crack from its own shrinkage during the initial cure.

If your site dimensions force a wider joint — say, 3 mm or more — the grout becomes vulnerable to hairline cracking within the joint itself, independent of pH attack. Conversely, joints narrower than 1.5 mm are difficult to seal properly and will weep water within months. The tolerance band exists for a reason. Respect it on-site.

For mosaics laid in high-splash zones — the shallow end of a pool, or a water feature in Whitefield or Sadashivanagar where children play — specify epoxy grout in every joint and plan for a professional re-seal in February of each year. The cost of maintenance is lower than the cost of replacing a mosaic with water damage beneath the tile.

Chlorine chemistry and grout durability

Chlorine itself does not attack epoxy grout directly. The problem is the pH environment in which chlorine exists. Free chlorine (hypochlorous acid) is most effective as a sanitiser at pH 6.5 to 7.4. Above pH 8.0, chlorine becomes less effective, so pool operators add more chlorine to compensate. The higher chlorine residual combines with the higher pH to create an alkaline oxidising environment — exactly the condition that softens polyurethane in epoxy-hybrid grout.

This is not a flaw in grout chemistry. It is a consequence of Bangalore's water and climate. The hard water from Cauvery, the intense April-May heat, and the monsoon humidity create a seasonal cycle that epoxy-hybrid grout was never designed to withstand. Architects and designers who have worked on pools in Bangalore for more than five years know this. Those new to the market often learn it the hard way — at the 18-month site inspection, when the joint lines begin to fail.

Questions we get asked

Can we use cement-based grout in a pool and avoid this problem altogether?

No. Cement-based grout is porous and will absorb chlorinated water, leading to sub-tile erosion and mould within six months. Epoxy-hybrid or pure epoxy is mandatory for any pool in Bangalore. The question is not whether to use epoxy, but which epoxy to use and how to maintain it.

If we specify pure epoxy from the start, do we still need to re-seal in February?

Pure epoxy is stable to pH 9.5 and does not require re-sealing for the first three to four years. After year four, a preventive re-seal every 24 months is prudent, even for pure epoxy. The sealant is a sacrificial layer that absorbs the first wave of pH and chlorine attack, extending the life of the grout beneath.

What is the difference between a shop drawing and an as-built for a pool mosaic?

A shop drawing specifies the design, tile size, joint width, grout type, and sealant schedule before fabrication. An as-built documents what was actually installed on-site — the joint widths that were achieved, the grout batch used, the cure time before water exposure, and the date of the first sealant application. Keep both. The as-built becomes your maintenance record and is essential for any future re-seal or repair.

Can we inspect the joint lines ourselves, or do we need a professional?

A trained eye can spot gross failure — visible cracks or weeping water. But early-stage separation (hairline gaps of 0.3–0.5 mm) requires raking light and magnification to detect. If your pool is in a high-traffic area or a commercial setting, hire a professional inspector in late February. The inspection fee is 8,000–12,000 rupees and will save you 80,000–150,000 in grout replacement if failure is caught early.

Does the type of pool (residential, resort, water feature) change the grout specification?

Exposure and water turnover determine the specification. A residential pool in HSR Layout with a standard pump and filter experiences moderate chlorine and pH swings. A resort pool or a water feature with higher bather load and more frequent chemical adjustment experiences more aggressive chemistry. For resort or commercial pools, pure epoxy grout and quarterly sealant inspection are standard. For residential pools, epoxy-hybrid with annual re-seal in February is acceptable if the mosaic is well-executed and joint lines are held to 2 mm or less.
