Mosaic design and grout-line specification: working with the atelier

No. Epoxy-hybrid grout does not bond to silicone. You must remove the old silicone, clean the joint to bare tile (a labour-intensive process), and re-grout with epoxy-hybrid. This is a full re-grout, not a patch. Most architects and contractors avoid this by specifying correctly the first time.

Does a 2mm joint look too tight? Will it show the mosaic pattern less clearly?

A 2mm joint is visually imperceptible at normal viewing distance (2–3 metres from the pool edge). The mosaic pattern reads the same at 2mm as at 3mm. The joint is there to hold the grout and protect the substrate; it is not a design element. If you want a visible grout line for aesthetic reasons, specify that separately (a contrasting grout colour, for example), but do not widen the joint for visibility. Visibility and chemistry are separate problems.

What if the pool owner does not maintain water chemistry? Will the grout still fail?
