Both are the result of how direct morning light interacts with gloss level, glass substrate, and the angle of incidence at which the eye receives the colour. The geometry of morning light in Bangalore micromarkets
North-facing rooms in Sadashivanagar, Jayanagar, and Malleshwaram receive diffuse skylight from sunrise through mid-morning. This light arrives at a shallow angle, scattering across the surface of a lacquered shutter without the intensity to bleach or saturate colour perception. Why gloss behaves differently than matte in direct light
A gloss lacquer (typically 80–90 degrees on the 60-degree gloss meter) creates specular reflection. In diffuse north light, this produces a uniform sheen that enhances colour depth. In direct east light, the same gloss becomes a source of glare and colour washout because the reflected brightness overpowers the transmitted colour signal.
A matte lacquer (40–50 degrees gloss) scatters light diffusely across its surface, reducing the intensity of any single reflection. In east-facing rooms, a matte finish holds saturation more consistently through the morning because it suppresses the high-brightness reflection that bleaches colour perception.
Glass thickness and substrate colour stability
Vetrova commissions lacquered-glass shutters on 5mm or 6mm float glass, depending on the span and load calculation. The glass thickness matters not only for structural performance but for how colour is perceived through the substrate.
A 5mm glass substrate transmits light with minimal absorption. In north-facing diffuse light, this transparency works in favour of colour saturation: the lacquer colour reads clean and direct. In east-facing direct light, that same transparency becomes a liability. The high-intensity morning sun penetrates the glass, interacts with the lacquer, and the combined effect of transmission and reflection creates the washout effect.
Moving to 6mm glass adds approximately 20% more material density in the light path. This does not significantly reduce glare, but it does shift the point at which maximum colour saturation occurs to a later time of day (typically 10am instead of 7.30am). For east-facing wardrobes in Indiranagar or Whitefield, this is a measurable but not transformative change.
Lacquer specification: gloss level as a design decision
The gloss level of a lacquered finish is not a cosmetic variable. It is a structural optical property that must be specified in relation to room orientation and intended use.
North-facing rooms: gloss is safe
In north-facing bedrooms (Sadashivanagar, Jayanagar, Basavanagudi), specify gloss lacquer at 80–90 degrees. The diffuse light will enhance the colour depth without creating glare or washout. The shutter will read at full saturation from 6am through mid-afternoon. Gloss also provides easier maintenance: Bangalore's Cauvery hard water (TDS 200–300 ppm) leaves mineral deposits on glass surfaces, and a gloss finish allows these to be wiped clean without streaking.
East-facing rooms: matte or semi-gloss
In east-facing bedrooms (Indiranagar, Whitefield, Kalyan Nagar, Marathahalli), specify matte lacquer at 40–50 degrees gloss, or semi-gloss at 60–70 degrees. Matte will hold colour saturation through the 6am–9am window when direct light is strongest. The trade-off is slightly reduced colour depth in diffuse light and a matte surface that can show fingerprints more readily in high-traffic wardrobes.
Semi-gloss (60–70 degrees) is a middle ground: it retains some of the colour-enhancing properties of gloss while reducing the washout effect of direct morning light. In our experience with east-facing projects in Indiranagar and Whitefield, semi-gloss has become the default specification for deep colours (navy, teal, charcoal) in direct-light rooms.
South-facing rooms: gloss with caution
South-facing wardrobes in Bangalore receive intense afternoon light from 2pm onwards. High gloss will create glare and colour washout in the afternoon. Specify matte or semi-gloss, and consider whether a patterned lacquer—such as the Bronze Lattice pattern or Deco Noir—will break up the light reflection and reduce perceived glare.
Monsoon humidity and lacquer durability in Bangalore
Bangalore's monsoon season (June through September) brings sustained humidity and temperature fluctuation. Lacquered-glass wardrobes are not affected by humidity in the way that wood or MDF are, but the hard-water mineral content in the air and on surfaces can affect how the lacquer is perceived over time.
A gloss lacquer will show water marks and mineral deposits more visibly than a matte finish. In monsoon months, this means the wardrobe will require weekly cleaning to maintain the colour saturation you specified. A matte finish is more forgiving: deposits are less visible, and the surface can go longer between cleaning cycles without appearing dulled.
For high-humidity projects in Indiranagar or Bellandur, or for clients who cannot commit to weekly glass cleaning, matte or semi-gloss is the pragmatic choice.
Commissioning a lacquered-glass wardrobe: the specification checklist
When you specify a lacquered-glass wardrobe with Vetrova, the shop drawing will include gloss level, glass thickness, lacquer colour code, and a note on room orientation. Before signing off on the drawing, confirm the following with your site team:
- Room orientation (north, south, east, west). If the room receives light from multiple directions, note the primary light source and the time of day the wardrobe will be most visible.
- Gloss level: default to semi-gloss (60–70 degrees) for east-facing rooms and gloss (80–90 degrees) for north-facing. Specify matte (40–50 degrees) only if the client has explicitly requested maximum colour saturation in direct light and accepts the maintenance trade-off.
- Glass thickness: 5mm is standard. 6mm is specified for spans over 1200mm or for high-impact areas; it will also slightly shift colour perception timing in east-facing rooms.
- Lacquer colour sample: request a 150mm × 150mm sample on the same glass thickness and gloss level as the finished wardrobe. View it in the actual room at 7am, 10am, and 2pm before approving the batch.
- Joint tolerance: lacquered shutters are fitted to ±1mm on all edges. Confirm this tolerance with the site dimensions before the shop drawing is finalised.
Pattern and gloss: a secondary consideration
Patterned lacquered glass—such as Azure Blossom, Coral Waves, or Golden Geometry—introduces a third variable into the colour-saturation equation. A pattern breaks up the surface reflection and reduces glare, which means a patterned gloss lacquer will behave more like a semi-gloss solid lacquer in direct light. This is useful in east-facing rooms where you want to maintain a gloss aesthetic without the washout effect.
Patterned matte lacquers are less common but can be commissioned. They offer maximum colour stability across all light conditions and room orientations, at the cost of reduced visual depth.

Will the colour look different on site than in the showroom sample?
Yes, if the showroom is north-facing or artificially lit and the site is east-facing with direct morning light. This is not a manufacturing defect; it is the expected optical behaviour of lacquered glass in different light conditions. Always request a site sample in the actual room and view it at multiple times of day before approving the batch.
Can we apply a matte topcoat to a gloss lacquer to reduce glare?
No. A topcoat will alter the colour perception and create a secondary reflection layer that introduces optical distortion. If the gloss level is wrong for the room orientation, the correct solution is to re-specify the lacquer at the matte or semi-gloss level before the shutter is fitted.
Does UV-protective glass (tinted or coated) help with colour stability in direct light?
UV-protective glass reduces colour fade over years of exposure, but it does not address the immediate washout effect caused by high-intensity direct light hitting a gloss surface. The colour saturation shift you see at 8am in an east-facing room is an optical effect of gloss and light geometry, not UV damage.
What gloss level should we specify for a west-facing wardrobe?
West-facing rooms in Bangalore receive intense afternoon and evening light (2pm–6pm). Specify matte or semi-gloss to avoid glare during the hottest part of the day. If the client prefers gloss for aesthetic reasons, request a patterned lacquer to break up the reflection.
How often does a lacquered-glass wardrobe need cleaning in monsoon season?
A gloss lacquer should be cleaned weekly with a microfibre cloth and distilled water (Bangalore's tap water will leave deposits). A matte or semi-gloss finish can be cleaned every two weeks. Use distilled water, not tap water, to avoid mineral buildup on the glass surface.
