At 6:30am, when the sun clears the treeline on the Cauvery side, the colour shifts. Not fades—shifts. The saturation lifts, the tone flattens. By 7am it is a different material to look at. The client notices. The architect wonders if the lacquer batch was wrong. It wasn't. The solar angle was.

Colour stability in lacquered glass is not a pigment problem. It is a geometry problem. And in Bangalore's residential micromarkets, where east-west orientation varies by street and solar declination swings 47 degrees across the year, this geometry compounds. This is the handover conversation most architects do not have with their glazier, and it is the one that matters most.

The gloss-angle relationship: why 60-degree measurements lie at 7am

Gloss is measured in a laboratory at a fixed angle: 60 degrees from the normal, under standardized D65 illumination. That number—60 gloss units—tells you how much light bounces back at that specific angle. It does not tell you what happens when the sun is 25 degrees above the horizon and hitting the glass from a different vector entirely.

When light strikes a lacquered-glass surface at a shallow angle—as it does in an east-facing room at dawn—the behaviour of that surface changes. A 60-degree gloss finish, which scatters light evenly at 60 degrees, begins to specularly reflect at lower angles. The surface appears to brighten. The colour appears to desaturate because the eye is receiving more reflected ambient light and less colour-filtered transmitted light. The pigment has not moved. The gloss profile has not changed. But the appearance has, measurably and immediately.

North-facing rooms and the stable morning

In a north-facing HSR Layout bedroom, the morning sun never strikes the glass directly until late in the day, and even then at a steep angle. The light that enters the room is diffuse, bounced off the Bangalore sky, consistent in angle and intensity. A lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in that light maintains its colour saturation because the gloss measurement at 60 degrees is close to the angle at which the light is actually arriving. The pigment reads true. The surface does not shift.

East-facing rooms and the 7am paradox

An east-facing bedroom in Indiranagar, Kalyan Nagar, or Whitefield experiences direct sun from roughly 5:30am onwards during the dry season (November to May). At 6am, the sun is 10–15 degrees above the horizon. At 7am, it is 20–25 degrees. At these angles, a 60-degree gloss finish begins to behave like a higher-gloss surface. Specular reflection dominates. The wardrobe shutter appears to bleach out, to lose saturation, even though nothing has changed about the material itself.

This effect is most pronounced in teal, deep blue, and grey lacquers—colours with high chroma that depend on the eye's ability to distinguish the pigment from the reflected light. Warm colours (terracotta, ochre, bronze) show the shift less obviously because the reflected light and the pigment colour are closer in temperature. But the shift is there in all of them.

Specification and site conditions: what to ask your glazier at RFQ

The solution is not to change the gloss. Changing gloss to compensate for solar angle is a guess, and it will fail in a different season or at a different time of day. The solution is to specify with full knowledge of the site geometry and to commission a sample board that is assessed in the actual room, at the actual time of day the client will see it most.

The three-point spec

When you brief a glazier on lacquered-glass wardrobe shutters, specify three things: the colour, the gloss level, and the orientation and aspect of the room. Not "teal, 60 gloss" but "teal, 60 gloss, east-facing Indiranagar bedroom, primary view at 7am to 8am." This forces the glazier to think about the actual light conditions, not just the material data sheet.

Request that the sample board be fitted in the room—not in the atelier, not in the showroom, but on site, in the wall opening or against the wall where the wardrobe will sit. Leave it there for three mornings. Walk past it at 6am, 7am, and 8am. If the colour shift troubles you, the gloss can be adjusted. A 45-degree gloss, which scatters more light and produces less specular reflection, will reduce the morning shift. A 85-degree gloss, which is nearly mirror-like, will exaggerate it. The site visit tells you which way to move.

Monsoon and humidity: a secondary variable

Bangalore's monsoon humidity (June to September, often 70–85% RH) introduces another layer. Lacquered glass does not absorb moisture, but the air itself becomes optically denser. Water vapour in the air scatters light, reducing contrast and flattening colour saturation across all orientations. An east-facing wardrobe that shifts at 7am in May will shift less noticeably in July, not because the material has changed but because the air has. This is not a defect. It is seasonal. Clients should be told this at handover, especially if the wardrobe is being assessed during the dry season and will be lived with through the monsoon.

Material choice and the colour-stability trade-off

Lacquered glass is chosen for its depth, its resistance to fingerprints, and its ability to hold a colour without the flatness of a painted surface. But that depth—that sense of colour sitting beneath a clear layer—is partly an illusion created by the angle at which light is hitting the surface. Change the angle, and the illusion shifts.

If colour stability across all times of day is a hard requirement, there are two routes. The first is to accept a gloss level lower than 60—a 45-degree or even a 30-degree matte finish will hold colour more consistently because it scatters light in all directions equally. The trade-off is a loss of depth; the colour will read flatter, more like a painted surface. The second route is to specify a pattern or texture into the lacquered glass—a frosted band, a frit, a geometric motif—which breaks up the specular reflection and makes the colour shift less visible to the eye. Patterns like Bronze Lattice or Deco Noir work especially well in east-facing rooms because the visual break disguises the gloss-angle shift that would otherwise be obvious in a plain lacquered field.

The handover conversation: what to document

When the wardrobe is fitted and the room is handed over, the architect and the glazier should walk the space together at the time of day the client will see it most. If it is an east-facing bedroom, that is 6:30am to 8am. If it is a north-facing dressing room, that is midday to 3pm. Document the colour as it appears at that time, in writing or in a photograph (though photographs often fail to capture the shift accurately). Note the gloss level, the lacquer batch number, and the date. If the client calls six months later saying the colour has changed, you have a record of what was specified and what was delivered.

The Cauvery hard water in Bangalore (TDS typically 200–300 ppm) can leave mineral deposits on glass over time, especially in bathrooms, but this does not affect lacquered wardrobes in bedrooms. However, if the wardrobe is in a room with high humidity or poor ventilation, the lacquer can develop a bloom—a fine white haze—over years. This is rare and preventable with proper atelier finishing, but it is worth mentioning in the handover brief so the client understands that the wardrobe is a finished surface, not a self-cleaning one.

Case study: HSR Layout versus Indiranagar, same spec, different outcome

A residential project in HSR Layout, master bedroom, north-facing, 3600mm × 2500mm wall. Wardrobe shutters in Emerald Feather, 60-degree gloss, 8mm lacquered glass. The room receives north light throughout the morning and indirect south light in the afternoon. The colour holds. The client is satisfied. No site visits needed beyond the handover walk-through.

Same colour, same gloss, same glass thickness, different project in Indiranagar, east-facing, 3600mm × 2500mm wall. The wardrobe is fitted in May, during the dry season. At 7am on the handover day, the colour appears lighter, less saturated than the sample board that was assessed in the atelier. The architect calls the glazier. The glazier comes to site at 7:15am and sees the shift immediately. The solution: the sample board should have been fitted in the room for a full week before the final wardrobe was manufactured, and the colour assessment should have happened at 7am, not at 10am in the showroom. By that point, the wardrobe is already installed. The gloss cannot be changed without refinishing. The client accepts the shift as a seasonal effect and learns to view the wardrobe in afternoon light, where it reads closer to the original intent.

This is not a failure of the material. It is a failure of the specification process. And it is entirely preventable.

Questions we get asked

If I specify a lower gloss—say, 30 degrees instead of 60—will the colour shift disappear?

It will reduce, not disappear. A 30-degree matte finish scatters light more evenly across angles, so the change in appearance as the sun moves is less pronounced. But you trade depth for stability. The colour will read flatter, more like a painted surface. In an east-facing room where the client views the wardrobe primarily in morning light, a 30–45 degree gloss is often the right choice. In a north-facing room where the light is always diffuse, 60 degrees is fine and gives you the colour depth you want.

Can I use a frosted or patterned lacquer to hide the colour shift?

Yes. A pattern breaks up the specular reflection, so the eye does not perceive the shift as a uniform change across the whole surface. Geometric patterns like Golden Geometry or organic patterns like Coral Waves are particularly effective in east-facing rooms. The trade-off is that you lose the clean, monolithic look of a plain lacquered field. But if colour stability is the priority, pattern is the answer.

Does the monsoon make the colour shift worse?

No. The monsoon humidity actually reduces the visibility of the shift because the air scatters more light overall, flattening contrast. The shift is most obvious in the dry season (November to May) when the air is clear and the morning sun is bright. If a wardrobe is commissioned and installed during the monsoon, the client may be surprised when the dry season arrives and the colour shift becomes apparent. This is worth flagging during the brief.

Should I always fit a sample board in the room before manufacturing?

Yes, if the room is east or west-facing and the client will view the wardrobe in early morning or late afternoon light. If the room is north-facing, a sample board in the atelier is usually sufficient. If the room is south-facing, the light is consistent and strong, and a sample board on site is less critical—but it never hurts to do it. The cost of a sample board (usually 500–800mm × 800mm, one day on site) is negligible compared to the cost of a full wardrobe that the client is unhappy with.

If the colour shift is visible at handover, can it be fixed?

Not without refinishing the shutters, which is expensive and time-consuming. The best approach is prevention: specify with full knowledge of the site geometry, fit a sample board in the room at the right time of day, and assess the colour in situ before manufacturing the full wardrobe. If the shift is visible at handover, document it, explain it to the client as a seasonal and angular effect (not a defect), and note the gloss level and batch number for the record.

The takeaway: specification is geometry

Lacquered-glass wardrobes are not a simple material choice. They are a specification that depends on the room's orientation, the time of day the client will see it, the season, and the gloss level. Two identical rooms with identical specs will perform differently because the sun is not identical in both rooms. This is not a failure of the material. It is the nature of light and surface finish.

When you specify a lacquered-glass wardrobe, think like a glazier: measure the aspect, note the solar angles, and commission a sample board in the actual room at the actual time of day. That one step—done before manufacturing, not after—will eliminate the morning-light surprises that plague east-facing bedrooms across Indiranagar, Whitefield, and Kalyan Nagar.
