The shutters open at 6:55am and the colour is already wrong. Not wrong in the sense of a failed batch or a misread spec sheet, but wrong in the sense that the deep emerald you approved under studio light three weeks ago has flattened into a grey-green the moment Bangalore's east-facing sun hits the glass at a 38-degree angle. By 7:30am, when the angle steepens, the saturation returns. This is not a defect. This is the contract between lacquered glass and morning light in a Koramangala bedroom, and it is worth understanding before you specify.

Why east-facing light reads differently on lacquered glass than on matte or satin finishes

Lacquered glass—glass with a cured polyurethane or acrylic coating applied to the back surface—is a reflective substrate. The gloss level of that lacquer (measured in GU, gloss units, on a 60-degree meter) determines how much light bounces back to the eye versus how much passes through the colour layer. A 90+ GU finish is near-mirror; a 40–50 GU finish sits in the mid-gloss range; anything below 20 GU approaches matte.

At dawn, when the sun is low and the angle of incidence is shallow, a high-gloss lacquered shutter acts as a partial mirror. The light reflecting off the surface—the direct beam—competes with the light passing through the glass and bouncing off the lacquer pigment layer behind it. The result is a washed-out appearance. The colour is still there, but it is being read through a veil of reflected sky light. By 9am, when the sun is higher and the angle of incidence is steeper, the geometry shifts. Less light reflects directly back; more light penetrates the glass and activates the pigment. Saturation returns.

The Bangalore east-facing window: specific angles and timing

In Bangalore, the sun rises due east year-round at approximately 6:15am (winter solstice) to 5:30am (summer solstice). An east-facing bedroom window in Koramangala, HSR Layout, or Indiranagar will receive direct sunlight beginning around 6:30–6:45am, depending on building obstruction and latitude within the city. The angle of incidence—the angle between the incoming light ray and the normal to the glass surface—is steepest (closest to 90 degrees, which is perpendicular to the glass) at sunrise and flattens as the sun climbs. This is counterintuitive to how most architects think about morning light, which tends to focus on brightness rather than angle of reflection.

The critical window is 6:45am to 7:45am. Within this hour, the angle shifts from approximately 38 degrees to 55 degrees. On a 90 GU lacquered shutter, this shift is visually noticeable. On a 50 GU shutter, it is perceptible but less dramatic. On a 30 GU matte lacquer, it is negligible.

Colour saturation and gloss level: the specification conversation

When you specify a lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter for an east-facing room, you are making two independent decisions: the colour (hue, depth, saturation) and the gloss level of the lacquer. These are not linked in the factory, but they are linked in the eye of the person opening the doors at 7am.

A deep colour—say, the Emerald Feather pattern or a custom charcoal—will show this effect more visibly than a pale colour because the eye is attuned to saturation shifts in dark tones. A pale grey or off-white lacquer will appear to change brightness rather than colour, which reads as less jarring. If your brief calls for a rich, dark colour in an east-facing location, you have three paths: accept the 7am shift as part of the material's behaviour; specify a lower gloss level (40–50 GU instead of 80+ GU) to reduce the reflection component; or adjust the window treatment (a sheer linen roller or a timber batten screen) to delay direct sunlight until 8am or later.

Gloss level and durability in Bangalore's climate

There is a secondary reason to consider gloss level in Bangalore: the monsoon. From June through September, relative humidity in the city climbs to 70–85%, and the Cauvery hard water (TDS approximately 200–300 ppm) deposits mineral film on any surface exposed to splash or spray. A high-gloss lacquer shows water marks and mineral deposits far more visibly than a satin or matte finish. If the wardrobe is positioned near a window or an ensuite bathroom, or if the site is in an older Koramangala or HSR Layout building with less-than-ideal drainage, specify 50 GU or lower. The trade-off is that you will see the 7am colour shift more clearly, but you will also see fewer fingerprints and water marks by September.

Shop drawings and the joint-line question

When the shutter is fitted, the joint line between the lacquered glass and the frame is typically 2–3mm. If the frame is timber (teak or walnut), it will read as a darker line. If it is aluminium (anodised bronze or champagne), it will read as a reflective line. The colour shift at 7am is a property of the glass itself, not the frame, so the joint line remains consistent. However, if you are specifying a pattern—such as Bronze Lattice or Golden Geometry—the pattern sits within the lacquer layer, not on top of it. The pattern will shift saturation along with the ground colour. Make this clear in your shop-drawing notes: "Colour shift under morning east light is expected and is not a defect."

Practical specification: what to ask the atelier

Before you issue your specification, ask for a 300 x 300mm sample of the lacquered glass at the proposed gloss level, fitted into a timber or aluminium frame. Request that the sample be delivered to the site and viewed at 7am under the actual window light, not in a showroom under controlled lighting. Bring a second sample at a different gloss level (e.g., 50 GU versus 80 GU) so you can compare the shift side by side. Document the time and the weather (clear sky, overcast, etc.) in your site notes. If the colour shift is unacceptable to your client, specify a lower gloss level or adjust the window treatment before the shutter is manufactured.

Joint tolerance on lacquered-glass shutters is typically ±1.5mm on each edge, which means the shutter may sit 1.5mm proud or 1.5mm recessed relative to the frame. This does not affect colour saturation, but it does affect how light reflects off the joint line. If the shutter sits proud, the shadow line will be more defined at 7am when the light is low and raking. Specify this in your RCP and your shop-drawing notes.

The case for matte lacquer in east-facing locations

If the design brief permits, a 30 GU matte lacquer in an east-facing wardrobe is the most forgiving specification. The colour will appear consistent from 6am to 6pm because there is minimal reflection component. The trade-off is that matte lacquer shows fingerprints more readily than gloss, and it is slightly more prone to marking under hard water spray. In Bangalore's climate, this means you will need to brief the homeowner on cleaning protocol: use a microfibre cloth and demineralised water (not tap water) for weekly maintenance during the monsoon. If your client is willing to accept this brief, matte lacquer solves the 7am colour-shift problem entirely.

Questions we get asked

Does the colour shift happen on frosted or sandblasted glass, or only on lacquered glass?

Frosted and sandblasted glass have a diffuse surface that scatters light evenly across all angles. They do not have a reflective component, so there is no angle-dependent colour shift. However, frosted glass is not typically used for wardrobe shutters because it obscures the interior and reduces the visual lightness of the room. Lacquered glass is preferred because the solid colour and gloss provide both privacy and visual depth.

If I specify a lower gloss level, will the shutter look less premium or less finished?

No. A 50 GU satin lacquer reads as refined and contemporary. A 30 GU matte lacquer reads as understated and architectural. The association between high gloss and quality is a retail habit, not a design principle. In Bangalore's climate and under east-facing light, a mid-gloss or matte finish is often the more considered choice.

Can the atelier adjust the gloss level after the shutter is manufactured if my client is unhappy with the 7am appearance?

No. The lacquer is cured and cannot be refinished on-site. Any modification would require returning the shutter to the atelier, which adds cost and time. This is why the 300 x 300mm sample, viewed on-site at the correct time of day, is non-negotiable in the specification process.

Does the colour shift happen on north-facing or west-facing wardrobes?

North-facing wardrobes receive diffuse, reflected light and no direct sun, so there is no angle-dependent colour shift. West-facing wardrobes receive direct sun from 3pm onwards, when the angle of incidence is steep (sun is high in the sky), so the colour shift is minimal. The effect is specific to east-facing and southeast-facing locations during the early morning window.

What is the warranty on lacquered-glass shutters if the colour appears to shift?

The warranty covers manufacturing defects (uneven lacquer, bubbles, adhesion failure) and mechanical defects (hinges, alignment). Colour shift under specific lighting angles is not a defect; it is a property of the material and the physics of light reflection. This distinction should be made clear in your client brief and in the handover documentation.
