The surface now reflects light in all directions equally, and the colour appears washed out, almost pasteurised.

Matte lacquer, by contrast, breaks the surface into microscopic irregularities (typically 0.8–1.2 micrometres in peak-to-valley height on a lacquered glass panel). These irregularities scatter light diffusely, regardless of the angle of incidence. Under noon light, a matte finish will appear less shiny than gloss—that is expected. But under diffuse monsoon light, the colour saturation remains stable because the finish is already optimised for scattered light. The perceived chroma stays consistent across the day and across seasons.

The Cauvery water factor

Bangalore's water TDS runs 200–300 ppm, which deposits mineral residue on any surface that dries after water contact. High-gloss lacquered wardrobes in north-facing rooms—which receive less direct sun and therefore dry more slowly during monsoon—are particularly vulnerable to water-spot visibility. Colour saturation under north-facing monsoon conditions: the measured difference

A resident living in that room experiences the wardrobe as consistent, not as a surface that shifts character with the weather.

Joint tolerance and finish durability in high-humidity zones

Lacquered glass expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. In Bangalore's monsoon season, relative humidity can swing 15–20 percentage points in a single day. A wardrobe shutter at 10mm thickness will experience linear expansion of roughly 0.15–0.22mm across its width (assuming a 1.2m width and a 10–15% humidity swing). This movement must be accommodated in the joint tolerance at the frame edge.

Gloss lacquer, because it is harder and more brittle, is more prone to micro-crazing at the joint line when humidity-driven movement stresses the finish. Matte lacquer, with its microscopically textured surface, distributes stress more evenly and resists crazing. We specify a 2mm joint tolerance (±1mm) for both finishes, but the matte finish tolerates the upper end of that range with no visible stress lines. On gloss, a 1.5–2mm joint movement becomes visible as a hairline crazing at the frame edge—not a structural failure, but a cosmetic liability that shows up under raking light.

When gloss is still the right choice

Matte is not universally superior. South-facing bedrooms in Jayanagar or Whitefield, which receive direct afternoon sun year-round, benefit from gloss lacquer because the specular peaks actually enhance colour saturation under high-angle direct light. East-facing rooms in Indiranagar, where morning light is direct and brief, can also carry gloss without saturation loss.

The decision matrix is simple: if the wardrobe receives more than 4 hours of direct sun per day (measured over the monsoon season), specify gloss. If it receives fewer than 2 hours, or if it is north-facing, specify matte. Between 2 and 4 hours, the choice depends on the colour saturation you want to emphasise. A deep Deco Noir pattern in a west-facing bedroom can carry gloss without saturation collapse because the base colour is already dark. A lighter pattern like Coral Waves in the same orientation should be matte to preserve the pastel saturation.

Specification and shop-drawing protocol

The finish choice must be locked at the specification stage, not decided during shop drawing. Once a wardrobe is lacquered—gloss or matte—refinishing is not economical. The lacquer layer is typically 80–120 micrometres thick, applied in three passes (primer, base, topcoat). Sanding back to matte or polishing back to gloss requires removal of the entire layer and reapplication, which introduces colour-match risk and extends lead time by 3–4 weeks.

At the shop-drawing stage, we require a signed-off RCP (reflected ceiling plan) that shows the light path into the room during monsoon (06:00–18:00 sun position for the latitude and month). Maintenance and long-term performance

Weekly cleaning becomes fortnightly; the visual appearance remains acceptable even if cleaning is delayed by a few days.

Both finishes are equally durable against impact and thermal stress. The difference is purely visual and maintenance-driven. If the project brief includes a low-maintenance handover (common in Bangalore's tech-corridor residential projects), matte is the specification that delivers it.

Colour and pattern pairing with matte lacquer

Not all patterns read equally well in matte. High-contrast geometric patterns—like Golden Geometry—benefit from the line definition that gloss provides. The sharp edges between gold and background appear crisper under specular reflection. In matte, these same lines appear softer, almost diffused. This is not a defect; it is a stylistic shift. If the design intent is to soften the geometry, matte is correct. If the intent is to emphasise the pattern, gloss is the right call, provided the room receives adequate direct light.

Botanical and organic patterns—Botanical Harmony or Cherry Bloom—read beautifully in matte because the natural forms already suggest soft, diffused light. The texture of the matte finish amplifies the organic quality. These patterns are often specified for north-facing rooms anyway, so the finish choice becomes almost inevitable.

Questions we get asked

Can we upgrade from gloss to matte after handover if the saturation is disappointing?

Not economically. Refinishing requires removal of the existing lacquer layer, which means the wardrobe must be uninstalled, sent back to the atelier, stripped, re-lacquered, and reinstalled. Lead time is 4–6 weeks; cost is 60–70% of the original commission. The better approach is to specify correctly at the outset, using a monsoon-season site visit and sun-path analysis to inform the decision.

Does matte lacquer yellow or discolour over time the way gloss does?

Both finishes use the same UV-stable lacquer base. Yellowing is a function of the lacquer chemistry, not the surface texture. A matte finish will not yellow faster than gloss. If anything, yellowing is slightly less visible on matte because the micro-texture breaks up the visual continuity of any colour shift. This is not a reason to choose matte, but it is not a drawback either.

What is the joint tolerance we should specify in the technical schedule for a matte lacquered wardrobe?
