Lacquered-glass wardrobe shutters and the equinox colour-stability paradox: why saturation holds in north-facing Sadashivanagar but shifts in south-facing Indiranagar
A lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter fitted flush to a north-facing bedroom wall in Sadashivanagar will hold its saturation from dawn to dusk across the year. The same pattern, specified for a south-facing room in Indiranagar, will shift perceptibly between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. — not because the lacquer has failed, but because the spectral distribution of light hitting the glass changes with the sun's angle and the room's cardinal orientation. This is not a defect in the material or the gloss spec. It is the physics of how the human eye reads colour under different light sources, and it is the detail that separates a handover that surprises the client from one that meets expectation.
The spectral light problem in Bangalore's bedroom orientations
Bangalore sits at 13°N latitude. In June (monsoon onset), the sun reaches 63° above the horizon at solar noon. In December (winter solstice), it drops to 39°. An east-facing bedroom window receives light that has passed through less atmosphere — shorter wavelength light (blue) is scattered less, and the light is cooler (higher colour temperature, around 5500K at dawn). A south-facing window at the same latitude receives light that has bounced off the street, the neighbouring building, and the sky — the spectral distribution is richer in longer wavelengths (warmer, around 3500K in late afternoon during winter).
Lacquered glass does not emit light; it reflects and transmits light. A 5mm lacquered-glass shutter with a mid-tone saturation (say, a teal or deep emerald) will appear more saturated under cool light (north and east faces) and more muted under warm light (south and west faces). This is not a gloss-level problem — a 20-degree gloss and a 60-degree gloss will both shift. It is a colour-rendering problem, and it is predictable if you know the room's orientation, the time of year, and the local water hardness (which affects the clarity of the glass substrate before lacquering).
Why north-facing Sadashivanagar holds colour better than south-facing Indiranagar
The north-facing stability window
A north-facing bedroom — common in Sadashivanagar's older villa plots and newer apartment blocks on the western edge of the locality — receives indirect, diffuse light for most of the day. The light bounces off the sky dome and is relatively consistent in colour temperature across the year (around 6500K in summer, 5800K in winter). A lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in this orientation will show minimal colour shift from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., because the light source is not moving significantly relative to the glass surface. The saturation you see at handover is the saturation you will see in six months and in two years.
This is why north-facing rooms are the designer's preferred spec for lacquered-glass colour work. The colour is stable. The handover photograph matches the in-situ reality.
The south-facing shift window
A south-facing bedroom in Indiranagar — where many of the newer residential projects on Sarjapur Road and towards Whitefield have south-facing living spaces — receives direct sun for 6 to 8 hours per day. In the winter months (November to February), the sun is lower in the sky (39° at noon), and the light that strikes a south-facing wall is warmer and more orange-shifted (around 3200K in late afternoon). In summer (April to June), the sun is higher (63° at noon), and the light is cooler and more blue-shifted (around 5500K at midday). A lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in this orientation will shift noticeably: a deep teal will appear more saturated and cooler in summer midday light, and warmer and more muted in winter late-afternoon light.
This is not a defect. It is the expected behaviour of colour under different spectral distributions. But it is the detail that catches clients off-guard if they have not been briefed.
Seasonal equinox windows and the monsoon humidity factor
The equinoxes (March 20 and September 22) mark the moment when the sun's declination is zero, and the light path through the atmosphere is symmetrical between north and south hemispheres. In Bangalore, the equinoxes are the moment when a south-facing room's light colour temperature is closest to neutral (around 5000K at noon). Before the equinox (winter), the light is warmer. After the equinox (summer), the light is cooler. For a south-facing lacquered-glass shutter, the equinox is the day of maximum saturation stability — the day when the colour you see at 9 a.m. most closely matches the colour at 3 p.m.
Bangalore's monsoon (June to September) adds a second variable. Humidity peaks at around 80% during the monsoon months, and cloud cover is persistent. The light diffuses further, colour temperatures flatten, and even south-facing rooms behave more like north-facing rooms — the saturation shift is less pronounced. The atelier's handover spec should account for this: if the client is viewing the wardrobe in July (monsoon peak), they are seeing the lacquered glass under diffuse, cool light. The same glass in March will appear noticeably warmer and more muted.
Gloss level, joint tolerance, and the handover spec
Why gloss level does not solve the colour-shift problem
Some architects specify a lower gloss (20-30 degree gloss) for lacquered-glass wardrobes in south-facing rooms, hoping that the diffusion of reflected light will reduce colour shift. This is a misunderstanding. Gloss level controls the specularity of the reflection — how sharp or soft the reflected image is — not the colour of the light being reflected. A 20-degree gloss and a 60-degree gloss, both lacquered in the same colour, will shift identically under the same spectral light source. The gloss level will only affect how much of the colour shift is visible to the eye: a higher gloss (60-degree) will show the shift more crisply, while a lower gloss will soften the appearance of the shift. But the shift itself is unchanged.
The correct spec is to acknowledge the shift in writing, to show the client a colour sample under the actual light conditions of the room (ideally at the equinox, when the light is most neutral), and to photograph the wardrobe at handover under consistent conditions — either early morning (8 a.m., before direct sun) or overcast afternoon (after 4 p.m., when the sun is lower). This creates a baseline against which the client can evaluate the colour over time.
Joint tolerance and the lacquered edge
The joint tolerance on a lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter is typically ±2mm on the width and height, and ±1mm on the thickness. The lacquered edge — where the 5mm glass is bevelled and the lacquer coat is feathered — must be inspected at handover to confirm that the lacquer has not chipped or lifted during transport and fitting. A chipped lacquered edge will show the clear glass substrate underneath, and this will reflect light differently than the lacquered surface. In a south-facing room where colour shift is already pronounced, a chipped edge will read as a visible defect, even if the chip is only 0.5mm wide.
The handover spec should include a clause requiring that all lacquered edges be inspected under consistent light (early morning or overcast), and that any chips larger than 0.3mm be documented and remedied before sign-off. Mapping the shift across Bangalore's micromarkets
The cardinal orientation of a bedroom is determined by the building's axis, not by the locality. But Bangalore's micromarkets have clustering patterns. North-south-facing buildings are common in Sadashivanagar (older villa plots, typically oriented with the main facade facing the street). East-west-facing buildings are common in newer apartment complexes in Whitefield and Sarjapur Road. Mixed orientations are standard in Indiranagar and Koramangala, where the street grid is irregular and buildings fill the available plot.
For a project in HSR Layout or Jayanagar, confirm the cardinal orientation of each bedroom before specifying a lacquered-glass wardrobe colour. For a north-facing room, any colour is stable. For a south-facing room, consider patterns with lower saturation or cooler base tones (like Azure Blossom, which reads as blue-grey and is less prone to warm-light muting). For an east-facing room, expect the colour to appear most saturated in the morning (7 a.m. to 10 a.m.) and warmer in the afternoon. For a west-facing room, expect the opposite: warmth and muting in the afternoon, cooler saturation in the morning.
The atelier's experience with Bangalore's climate and building stock is that the most stable lacquered-glass handovers occur in north-facing rooms and in monsoon-facing (east-facing) rooms where the morning light is the primary viewing condition. The most challenging handovers occur in south-facing rooms in winter, where the afternoon light is warm and orange-shifted, and in west-facing rooms in summer, where the late-afternoon light is intense and warm.
Water hardness and substrate clarity: the hidden variable
Bangalore's water hardness averages 200–300 ppm TDS (total dissolved solids), which is moderate-to-hard. When lacquered-glass is cleaned with hard water, mineral deposits accumulate on the surface, and the clarity of the glass substrate degrades slightly. This affects how the lacquered colour is perceived: a slightly cloudy substrate will diffuse the reflected light and mute the colour shift. Over time, as the mineral deposits build up (especially in the monsoon months when humidity is high and evaporation is slow), the colour will appear progressively more muted, regardless of the light source.
The handover spec should include a cleaning protocol: use distilled water or a 50-50 mix of distilled water and white vinegar, applied with a microfibre cloth, to clean the lacquered surface. Avoid tap water for the final rinse. This keeps the substrate clear and preserves the colour saturation. For a south-facing wardrobe, where colour shift is already a factor, this cleaning protocol is essential to prevent the addition of substrate cloudiness on top of spectral colour shift.

If I specify a lacquered-glass wardrobe in a south-facing bedroom, will the colour change permanently?
No. The colour will shift throughout the day as the light source changes, and it will shift seasonally as the sun's angle changes. But it will return to its baseline colour when the light conditions return. A south-facing wardrobe will appear warmer and more muted in winter afternoons, and cooler and more saturated in summer midday. This is reversible and predictable. The lacquer itself does not fade or degrade due to light exposure — Bangalore's UV index is moderate (6–8 in summer), and the lacquered surface is protected by the glass. If you see a permanent colour shift over months, it is likely substrate cloudiness from mineral deposits, not lacquer degradation.
Should I always specify north-facing rooms for lacquered-glass wardrobes?
North-facing rooms are the safest spec for colour stability, but they are not the only option. A south-facing room is acceptable if the client is briefed on the colour shift, if the colour is chosen to be stable under warm light (cooler base tones, lower saturation), and if the handover is photographed and documented under consistent light conditions. The key is transparency: show the client the colour sample in the actual room under actual light, at the time of day when they will see the wardrobe most often. If they see it most often in the afternoon, photograph the handover in the afternoon.
Does a higher gloss level reduce colour shift in a south-facing room?
No. Gloss level affects the sharpness of the reflection, not the colour of the reflected light. A 60-degree gloss and a 20-degree gloss, both in the same lacquered colour, will shift identically under the same light source. The higher gloss will show the shift more crisply; the lower gloss will soften the appearance of the shift. If colour stability is the priority, choose the gloss level based on the aesthetic intent (sharp reflection vs. soft diffusion), not on the assumption that lower gloss will reduce colour shift.
Can I use a patterned lacquered glass (like Botanical Harmony or Bronze Lattice) in a south-facing room without colour-shift problems?
A patterned lacquered glass like Botanical Harmony or Bronze Lattice will shift in the same way as a solid-colour lacquered glass. The pattern does not stabilize the colour. However, a pattern can mask the perception of colour shift: if the pattern has high contrast (dark lines on a light ground, or vice versa), the eye may focus on the pattern rather than the base colour, and the shift may be less noticeable. For a south-facing room, a pattern with strong contrast is often a better choice than a solid colour.
How do I document the colour at handover if the client is unhappy with the shift?
Photograph the wardrobe under three conditions: early morning (8 a.m., indirect light), midday (12 p.m., direct or diffuse light depending on the season), and late afternoon (4 p.m., warm light). Include the date and time in the metadata. This creates a visual record of the colour under different light sources and allows the client to see that the shift is expected and reversible. If the client disputes the colour, the photographs provide evidence that the wardrobe is performing as specified. Include this documentation in the handover pack, along with a note on the room's cardinal orientation and the seasonal light conditions.
