Walk into a south-facing bedroom in Indiranagar at 11:30am in March and the wardrobe shutters read as a clean, saturated teal. Return at 3:15pm and the same lacquered glass has flattened to a washed grey-blue—not because the glass has changed, but because the sun angle has crossed the gloss threshold where specular reflection overwhelms the pigment layer. In a north-facing Rajajinagar flat thirty kilometres away, the same specification holds its colour saturation through the afternoon, the light geometry never steep enough to trigger that washout. This is not aesthetics. This is physics meeting specification, and it changes how you write the shop drawing.

The geometry of gloss and seasonal light in Bangalore's cardinal planes

Bangalore sits at 12.97° north latitude. Between March and September—the vernal equinox through to the monsoon onset—the sun's noon altitude climbs from 64° to 78°. A south-facing wall receives direct solar radiation at increasingly steep angles; a north-facing wall receives only diffuse, reflected light. This matters because a lacquered-glass surface at 60° gloss (the standard spec for wardrobe shutters) behaves optically like a shallow mirror.

When light hits a high-gloss lacquered surface at a shallow angle (morning or late afternoon on a south-facing elevation), the pigment layer reads clearly and colour saturation is full. When the same surface receives light at a steep angle (noon to 3pm on a south-facing wall in spring), the gloss layer acts as a specular reflector—it bounces the incident light away without letting it penetrate to the pigment. The eye receives mostly reflected sky or ceiling light, and the pigment appears desaturated. North-facing walls, receiving only diffuse light, never hit this threshold; the light always arrives at a wide range of angles simultaneously, so no single steep angle dominates.

Why gloss level is a specification decision, not a finish preference

The 60° plateau and Bangalore's humidity load

At Vetrova, we specify 60° gloss for wardrobe shutters as a working compromise. Higher gloss (80°+) would amplify the colour-shift problem in south-facing rooms; lower gloss (40°) would compromise cleanability and water-bead performance during Bangalore's June-to-September monsoon humidity surge, when TDS in the Cauvery water runs 200–300 ppm and mineral deposit rings form on any matte surface within a fortnight.

The 60° gloss sits at what we call the saturation-stability plateau. It's high enough to shed water and resist fingerprint embedding on a hard-water site, but shallow enough that the colour shift across a south-facing room's daily light arc stays within a perceptible but acceptable range—roughly one to two steps on a colour card, not the four-to-five step crash you'd see at 80° gloss.

Specifying finish hardness by orientation

Cardinal orientation also drives the hardness specification. A south-facing wardrobe in Indiranagar or Koramangala receives 6–7 hours of direct UV exposure daily during the spring and early-summer months. The lacquer film must be harder and more UV-stable to resist photo-degradation; we specify a two-pack polyurethane lacquer with a pencil hardness of 3H minimum. A north-facing wardrobe in Rajajinagar or Yelahanka, receiving only diffuse and reflected UV, can run at 2H hardness; the labour cost and cure time drop, and the finish remains stable over the same service life.

This is not a cosmetic difference. A 2H finish on a south-facing elevation will show micro-cracking and colour drift within 18–24 months. A 3H finish will hold for 5–7 years. The architect who omits orientation from the lacquer spec will hand over a wardrobe that looks "wrong" by year two, and the finger-pointing begins.

Joint tolerance and the vernal-equinox colour-reading moment

The colour shift is most visible during the equinoxes—March and September—when the sun's noon altitude is transitional. At the vernal equinox (21 March), the sun at noon in Bangalore is at 64° altitude; at the autumnal equinox (23 September), it's the same. Between these dates, the angle climbs and descends. A south-facing wardrobe shutter will show maximum colour stability in January (sun at 40° altitude, shallow angle, pigment reads clearly all day) and maximum instability in June (sun at 78° altitude, steep angle, gloss dominates from 11am to 4pm).

For architects specifying lacquered-glass wardrobes, this means the colour-approval sample must be viewed under the light conditions that will exist when the project hands over—not in the atelier under north-facing studio light. If handover is in May or June, commission a site visit to the wardrobe location at 2pm on a clear day, and view the sample in that light. The colour you see then is the colour the client will live with. If you approve the sample indoors and the wardrobe arrives on site to look "different," the specification was incomplete, not the execution.

Patterns that hold saturation across cardinal orientations

Certain lacquered-glass patterns perform more consistently across orientation changes than others. Solid saturated colours—deep teals, charcoals, forest greens—show the gloss-angle washout most visibly. Patterns that incorporate white or light ground, or that use metallic or textured elements, distribute the light reflection across multiple micro-planes and read more stably across the day and across orientation.

The Azure Blossom pattern uses a pale ground with teal line-work; the white ground diffuses specular reflection and the pattern itself remains legible even when the gloss angle shifts. Golden Geometry employs a brushed-brass metallic inlay that scatters light across multiple angles, reducing the single-gloss-plane effect. Deco Noir, by contrast—a solid deep charcoal with high saturation—will show a visible colour shift in any south-facing room and should only be specified for north-facing elevations or for clients who understand and accept the seasonal light behaviour as part of the design intent.

Commissioning a wardrobe: the orientation-aware brief

When you brief the atelier, include the cardinal orientation of the wardrobe elevation and the expected handover month. Specify the gloss target (60° is standard; we can go to 50° for matte-preference clients in north-facing rooms, or to 70° for high-traffic commercial specs). Name the finish hardness requirement (2H for north-facing, 3H for south-facing; 4H only if the room receives direct afternoon sun and the client wants maximum UV resistance). Request a site-specific colour approval sample—not a desk-side sample—and schedule the viewing for the time of day when the wardrobe will receive its strongest light.

The shop drawing should carry a note: "Gloss level 60° at 60° angle. Colour approval sample viewed on site 2pm, 15 May. Finish hardness 3H (south-facing elevation, high UV exposure). Lacquer system: two-pack polyurethane, pencil hardness minimum 3H, UV-stable resin, applied in three coats, sanded between coats, final coat cured 14 days before fitting." This level of specificity prevents the call on handover day when the client says the shutters look "different than expected."

Why the atelier views this as a calibration, not a problem

The colour shift across a south-facing wardrobe's day is not a defect; it's an optical property of gloss and light geometry. The atelier's job is to specify the gloss, hardness, and pattern in a way that makes this property visible and acceptable—or to choose a pattern and finish that minimizes it. A designer who understands the geometry can use this behaviour deliberately: a pattern specified for a south-facing room might intentionally shift from teal to grey-blue across the afternoon, creating a subtle temporal dimension to the interior. Or the architect might specify north-facing placement and a lower-gloss finish to eliminate the shift entirely.

The difference between a wardrobe that looks "right" and one that looks "wrong" is often not the glass or the colour, but the orientation-aware finish specification and the timing of the colour approval. Bangalore's latitude and seasonal light angles are fixed; the specification is what moves.

Questions we get asked

Can we reduce the colour shift by using a matte finish instead of gloss?

A matte finish (40° gloss or lower) will reduce the colour shift, but it will show water spots and mineral deposits within weeks on a Bangalore site with Cauvery TDS at 200–300 ppm. The tradeoff is colour stability for maintenance burden. Matte is viable only in north-facing rooms where UV exposure is minimal and where the client accepts weekly cleaning as part of the wardrobe's care protocol. For most south-facing Bangalore homes, 60° gloss is the practical middle ground.

If we specify a solid colour like Deco Noir for a south-facing wardrobe, will it look "wrong" to the client?

It will look different at 2pm than it does at 10am, and yes, a client who hasn't been briefed will notice and question it. The solution is transparency: show the client a colour-approval sample in the actual room at the actual time of day the wardrobe will receive its strongest light. If the client approves the sample in that light, they have seen the behaviour and consented to it. If you approve the sample in the atelier and the wardrobe arrives on site to look "different," that's a specification gap, not a manufacturing issue.

Does north-facing vs south-facing make a difference to the lacquer's durability?

Yes. South-facing elevations receive 6–7 hours of direct UV daily during spring and summer; north-facing elevations receive diffuse UV only. A 3H finish on a south-facing wardrobe will hold its gloss and colour for 5–7 years. A 2H finish on the same elevation will show micro-cracking and colour drift within 18–24 months. For north-facing rooms, a 2H finish is adequate and reduces cost and cure time. Orientation is a durability variable, not just an aesthetic one.

Can we use a pattern like Azure Blossom on a south-facing wardrobe without worrying about colour shift?

Patterns with lighter grounds and line-work are more forgiving than solid saturated colours because they distribute light reflection across multiple planes. Azure Blossom will still show a subtle shift in tone as the gloss angle changes, but the pattern itself remains legible and the effect is less jarring than a solid colour washout. It's a good choice for south-facing rooms where the client wants colour without the daily shift being a focal point.

What's the difference between a "colour approval sample" and a "production sample"?

A colour approval sample is a single 150mm × 150mm lacquered-glass panel, viewed in the actual room at the actual light conditions, used to confirm the colour before production begins. A production sample is a full-size shutter or section, finished to production spec, used to validate the fit, joint tolerance, and hardware function before the full wardrobe is built. Both are necessary. The colour approval happens first, on site, in natural light. The production sample is reviewed in the atelier under controlled conditions before the full commission proceeds to site fitting.

Commissioning a lacquered-glass wardrobe fitted to your Bangalore home

The colour you see in the atelier sample is not the colour the wardrobe will always show. Bangalore's latitude, seasonal light angles, and gloss physics guarantee a shift—the only question is how much, and whether the specification has anticipated it. Talk to the atelier about your wardrobe's cardinal orientation, your handover month, and your tolerance for colour variation.
