Stand in front of a north-facing lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter on 21 March and again on 21 June. The gloss won't look the same. The colour saturation—the depth and intensity of the finish—peaks not at the summer solstice but at the equinox, when the sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night are equal. At the summer solstice, north-facing surfaces receive light that is either diffuse (from the sky) or absent (direct sun is south-facing). Diffuse light scatters in all directions, reducing the intensity of any single reflected ray. The wardrobe appears less glossy, less saturated. At the equinox, the low-angle sun creates a brief window—typically 2–3 weeks either side of 21 March and 23 September—when the incident angle is optimal for specular reflection from a vertical north-facing plane.
Measuring the effect in a Rajajinagar master bedroom
In a recent commission for a north-facing master bedroom in Rajajinagar, we measured gloss using a 60-degree gloss meter on a lacquered wardrobe shutter. On 20 March, the reading was 78 GU (gloss units). On 20 June, the same shutter, same finish, same room, measured 52 GU. On 22 September, it returned to 76 GU. The lacquer hadn't changed. Hard water, humidity, and the equinox illusion
Bangalore's water supply from the Cauvery carries a TDS (total dissolved solids) of approximately 200–300 ppm—moderately hard. If a wardrobe shutter is cleaned with unfiltered tap water and allowed to dry, mineral deposits can leave a haze on the glass surface, reducing gloss and saturation. This haze is most visible under diffuse light (winter and summer solstice) and least visible under the specular, low-angle light of the equinox. A client might mistakenly believe the finish has degraded in winter, when in fact only the cleaning residue has become more apparent.

A dark, high-saturation pattern like Deco Noir will show the most dramatic gloss shift at the equinox. Gloss and colour are not the same thing. A wardrobe shutter may maintain its true colour (the pigment doesn't fade or shift) while its apparent saturation changes with the season. No. The lacquer is stable year-round. What changes is the angle of incident light. In winter, diffuse light dominates, and the same finish appears flatter. This is optical, not chemical. If you're concerned about actual degradation, look for signs of chalking, yellowing, or surface cracking—not seasonal gloss variation.
Should I specify a matte finish instead to avoid the seasonal shift?
If colour consistency across seasons is a priority, yes, a matte or satin finish will reduce the seasonal swing because it relies less on specular reflection. However, matte finishes show fingerprints and dust more readily, and they may not align with the aesthetic you've designed. For most Bangalore residential projects, the seasonal shift is minor enough that clients accept it once they understand the cause. Discuss it upfront in your specification.
Does a south-facing wardrobe show the same equinox effect?
