A 6mm lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in a Whitefield east-facing master bedroom reads deep emerald at 6.45am. By 7.15am, the same panel has shifted to a muted sage. By noon, under indirect light, it settles into a third register entirely—one the architect never specified, and one the client notices every morning at handover. This isn't a defect. It's a material property that no one measured on site.

Lacquered glass is not a stable colour surface. Its hue, saturation, and perceived depth depend entirely on angle of incidence, gloss level, and the substrate beneath. In Bangalore's monsoon months—June through September—when humidity runs 75–85% and morning diffuse light dominates east-facing elevations, the colour shift becomes architectural fact, not perception. The spec that holds in a showroom under 4000K LED becomes a different material at 6.50am under Bangalore's pre-monsoon sky.

This is the conversation architects and designers should have with their glass atelier before the shop drawing is issued, not after the shutter is hung.

Why gloss level determines colour stability in east-facing light

Lacquered glass achieves its colour through a polyurethane or acrylic layer applied to the back surface of float glass, then cured. The front surface—the one visible in the room—reflects ambient light. The gloss level of that front surface (measured in GU, gloss units, at 60 degrees) determines how much light scatters versus reflects specularly.

A high-gloss lacquered shutter (85+ GU) reflects most light straight back. In east-facing morning light, this means the colour reads as a direct reflection of the sky itself—cool, desaturated, sometimes nearly washed. A matte or satin finish (20–40 GU) scatters light diffusely across the surface, which allows the pigment beneath to show through more consistently. The colour holds.

The Indiranagar morning-light test

Indiranagar's grid of east-west streets means master bedrooms in new-build projects along 12th Main, 80 Feet Road, and the Sarjapur Road corridor face due east. Between 6.30am and 8.00am, before the sun clears the tree line and before any shading device activates, these rooms receive 30–45 minutes of direct, low-angle light. This is the critical window.

If you've specified a 10mm lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in a mid-tone colour—say, the Emerald Feather pattern—you must test it in that 6.50am light, not in the showroom at 10am. The gloss level of the front surface will determine whether the colour you approved on a sample holds for the first hour the client uses the room, or whether it reads as a different material entirely.

Specifying to the gloss level: what architects need to write into the RCP

The standard wardrobe spec reads: "6mm lacquered glass, [colour name], frameless, soft-close hinges, 1.5mm joint tolerance." This is incomplete for east-facing applications in Bangalore. The missing variable is gloss level.

Three gloss-level tiers and their morning-light behaviour

  • High-gloss (80–90 GU): Reflects morning light like a mirror. Colour reads desaturated, cool, sometimes nearly white in direct sun. Suitable for north-facing or interior-lit wardrobes. Not recommended for east-facing master bedrooms in Indiranagar, Koramangala, or Whitefield unless the client explicitly wants a light, reflective surface.
  • Satin (40–60 GU): Balances reflection and diffusion. Colour holds reasonably well through morning light, shifts slightly by 8am, stabilises by 9.30am. This is the middle ground—acceptable for east-facing applications if the colour itself is mid-to-dark tone (forest green, charcoal, deep blue).
  • Matte (15–30 GU): Scatters light across the surface. Colour remains most consistent through the morning window. Pigment shows through. Best for east-facing bedrooms where colour stability is non-negotiable. Trade-off: fingerprints and dust show more readily; cleaning protocol becomes part of the handover spec.

The atelier can commission any of these finishes. The choice must be made at the RCP stage, not during shop-drawing review. Once the glass is lacquered and cured, the gloss level is fixed.

The Bangalore climate variable: humidity, hard water, and gloss degradation

East-facing bedrooms in Bangalore's monsoon season (June–September) experience 75–85% relative humidity. The Cauvery water supply carries TDS of 200–300 ppm—hard enough to leave mineral deposits on glass surfaces after water contact. Neither of these factors changes the initial gloss level, but both affect how the surface reads over time.

A matte-finish lacquered shutter will show water spots more visibly than a high-gloss one. This is not a material failure; it's a maintenance reality. The handover spec should include cleaning protocol: demineralised water, soft microfibre cloth, no abrasive pads. If the client doesn't follow this, the matte surface will appear clouded by August, even though the lacquer itself is intact.

For architects specifying in Indiranagar, Kalyan Nagar, or any monsoon-exposed east-facing bedroom, this conversation should happen at the design stage. If matte finish is chosen for colour stability, the client needs to understand the maintenance requirement. If high-gloss is chosen for ease of cleaning, the client needs to accept the morning-light colour shift. There is no option that eliminates both variables.

Shop-drawing protocol: testing at site light angles

The atelier's responsibility is to provide a sample—a 150mm × 150mm piece of 6mm lacquered glass in the specified colour and gloss level—for site testing. This sample should be tested in the actual bedroom, at the actual window, at 6.50am, with the sample held at the angle the finished shutter will occupy (typically 90 degrees to the wall plane, but verify from the elevation).

The architect or designer should photograph this sample at 6.50am, 7.30am, 8.30am, and 10.00am. These images become part of the approval record. If the client approves the 7.30am appearance, that's what they're signing off on—not the noon appearance, which will be different.

This is not standard practice. Most wardrobes are approved in the showroom, under controlled lighting, at midday. The result is a surprise at handover, when the morning light reveals a colour the client didn't choose.

Colour patterns and gloss-level interaction: which patterns hold in morning light

Certain lacquered-glass patterns are more forgiving of gloss-level variation than others. Solid colours shift most noticeably. Patterns with high contrast—like the Bronze Lattice or Deco Noir—distribute light across multiple hues, so a shift in one component is less visible to the eye. Botanical or floral patterns like Cherry Bloom or Botanical Harmony use layered colour, which provides natural depth even under direct morning light.

If an east-facing bedroom spec calls for a solid mid-tone colour, matte or satin gloss is non-negotiable. If the spec allows for pattern, a high-contrast or multi-hued design can absorb the morning-light shift more gracefully, even at higher gloss levels.

Questions we get asked

Can we test gloss level after the wardrobe is installed, and change it if it doesn't work?

No. The gloss level is part of the lacquer cure. Once the glass is cured, the finish is permanent. If the client rejects the gloss level at handover, the only remedy is to commission a replacement shutter—a 6–8 week lead time and a full re-spec cost. This is why testing the sample on site, in morning light, before the shop drawing is issued, is not optional for east-facing bedrooms.

Does matte finish scratch more easily than high-gloss?

Matte and high-gloss lacquered finishes have the same hardness (both are cured polyurethane). Matte finishes show dust and fingerprints more visibly because the light scatter makes surface debris more apparent. They don't scratch more easily, but they require more frequent cleaning to maintain appearance. For a master bedroom in Indiranagar, this is usually acceptable—the wardrobe isn't a high-traffic element.

If we specify satin gloss (50 GU), will the colour hold through the entire morning window?

Satin will show some shift between 6.50am and 8.00am, but less than high-gloss. By 8.30am, once the sun clears the tree line and indirect light dominates, the colour stabilises. For most clients, this is acceptable—they're not staring at the wardrobe at 7.00am every morning. But if colour stability is the primary design driver, matte is more reliable.

Should we always choose matte for east-facing bedrooms?

Not always. If the colour is a dark, saturated tone (deep green, charcoal, navy), even high-gloss will read acceptably in morning light because there's enough pigment to show through the reflection. If the colour is pale or mid-tone, matte is safer. The site test with the actual sample answers this question definitively.

Does the frame material (aluminium, stainless, brass) affect how the lacquered glass reads in morning light?

The frame material affects overall visual weight and warmth, but not the gloss-level behaviour of the glass itself. A satin-gloss lacquered shutter will behave identically in morning light whether the frame is anodised aluminium or brushed brass. Choose the frame for design coherence; choose the gloss level for light performance.

The handover conversation that should happen before the spec is locked

At the RCP stage, when the wardrobe is being specified, the architect or designer should ask the client: "This bedroom faces east. Between 6.50am and 8.00am, the morning light will affect how the colour reads. Would you prefer the colour to remain stable (which requires matte finish and more frequent cleaning), or are you comfortable with a slight shift in tone as the light changes?" This is not a technical question—it's a design preference. The answer determines the gloss-level spec.

Most clients, when given this choice explicitly, choose stability. They're willing to clean more often to see the colour they approved. Once that choice is made, the spec becomes: "6mm lacquered glass, [colour], matte finish (20–30 GU), 1.5mm joint tolerance, demineralised water and microfibre cloth for maintenance."

The atelier provides the sample, the architect tests it in morning light, the client approves it, and the shutter is built to that standard. No surprises at handover.
