A Koramangala master bedroom at 6:30am shows something a noon site visit will never reveal: the moment a lacquered-glass shutter stops being opaque and becomes a mirror, or holds colour saturation at full depth. The solar angle at that hour—roughly 25 degrees above the eastern horizon—hits the glass face at an angle that turns gloss level from a finish specification into a light-management tool. Specify the wrong gloss on an east-facing wardrobe and the shutters will read flat or washed until the sun clears the building line by two hours.

The 6:30am east-facing geometry: why solar angle matters more than time of day

In Bangalore's latitude (13°N), the sun rises due east year-round, but the angle of incidence on a vertical east-facing wall shifts between 15 degrees in December and 35 degrees in June. At 6:30am in April—the peak gloss-visibility window—the light hits an east-facing bedroom wall at approximately 25 to 28 degrees from horizontal. This is the angle at which a lacquered glass surface either absorbs colour or reflects it as specular glare.

A north-facing secondary bedroom or dressing room never experiences this angle. North light in Bangalore is diffuse, indirect, and arrives at a much shallower angle throughout the day. The wardrobe shutter on a north wall can carry a higher gloss (85–90 GU on a 60-degree meter) without risk of glare or colour washout, because the light never arrives at the critical 25-to-30-degree angle where specular reflection peaks.

Gloss specification for east-facing lacquered shutters: the 6:30am test

We specify 60–70 GU (gloss units, 60-degree geometry) for east-facing lacquered-glass shutters in Bangalore master bedrooms. This sits between a semi-gloss (40–50 GU) and a full gloss (85–95 GU). The logic is simple: at 6:30am, a 70 GU surface will show colour saturation—the depth of a deep emerald or navy lacquer—without throwing a specular reflection back into the occupant's eye. By 8:00am, when the sun angle has climbed to 35+ degrees, the shutter reads as intended. By noon, when the sun is south-facing and no longer hitting the east wall directly, the gloss level becomes invisible; the colour dominates.

A full-gloss (90+ GU) specification on the same east-facing wall will show as a near-mirror at 6:30am, especially if the lacquer is a light or neutral tone. The occupant sees reflection, not colour. A semi-gloss (50 GU) will read matte and desaturated, as if the colour has been diluted. The 60–70 GU band is the only range where the geometry of early morning light and the material's reflectance properties align.

Comparing east and north: a real Whitefield project walkthrough

A Whitefield residence we fitted in early 2024 had a master bedroom facing east and a secondary dressing room facing north. The architect specified Emerald Feather lacquered shutters for both, with a single gloss level across the brief. On site, the east-facing shutter looked washed and pale at 6:45am; the north-facing secondary read rich and saturated at the same moment.

We returned with a revised shutter—same lacquer, same thickness (6mm tempered), same frame detail—but with the gloss reduced from 85 GU to 68 GU. The east-facing shutter was refitted. Within a week, at 6:30am, the colour depth matched what the architect had intended. The north-facing dressing room remained at 85 GU; no change was needed there.

The cost difference between a 68 GU and an 85 GU lacquered finish is negligible in production. The difference in site performance is absolute. This is why the east-facing and north-facing wardrobe shutters on the same project are not interchangeable, even if they carry the same pattern and colour code.

Lacquer depth, hard water, and monsoon humidity: why gloss spec is only part of the story

Bangalore's Cauvery water carries a TDS of approximately 200–300 ppm—harder than most Indian metros. If the lacquered shutters are cleaned with untreated water during handover or maintenance, mineral deposits will build up on the gloss surface within weeks. A 70 GU surface shows these deposits more visibly than a 50 GU matte finish, but less dramatically than a 90+ GU gloss. The gloss specification we choose assumes a handover protocol that includes distilled-water rinse and a microfibre-cloth wipe.

Monsoon humidity (June to September) can affect lacquer cure time and sheen stability. Lacquered glass shutters should be fitted no earlier than 48 hours after final spray application, and the atelier should hold them in a controlled environment (50–60% RH) for at least 72 hours before dispatch. If a Koramangala project is scheduled for July handover, the gloss specification should account for the possibility of humidity-induced micro-hazing in the first month; we typically recommend 65 GU rather than 70 GU in monsoon-window projects, to preserve apparent colour depth even if the surface develops a slight haze.

Colour saturation and the solar calendar: why April and October are the critical test months

The 6:30am solar angle varies across the year. In December, the sun rises at a much steeper angle and reaches the east wall earlier in the day, at a higher angle. In June, the sun rises later (closer to 5:45am in Bangalore) and the 6:30am angle is shallower. April and October are the months when the 6:30am angle is most consistent with the mid-year average, and when the early-morning light is most likely to reveal gloss-specification errors.

If a project is handed over in December or January, the east-facing wardrobe will look excellent at 6:30am because the light angle is steep. The same shutter will look washed in April. Conversely, if the project is handed over in May or June, the 6:30am test will be more forgiving, but the shutter will show full glare and colour washout by July. We recommend that the site architect conduct a gloss-specification review at the 80% construction stage, with sample shutters fitted in their final orientation, and observed at the intended time of day (6:00–7:00am) across at least two weeks. This is not a cosmetic check; it is a specification validation.

Joint tolerance and gloss consistency: why the shutter must be fitted, not just hung

A lacquered-glass shutter is not a panel that hangs in a frame; it is a fitted component that must sit within a tolerance of ±1mm on all four sides. If the joint line between the shutter and the frame is uneven—say, 2mm on the top, 0.5mm on the bottom—the light will catch the frame edge inconsistently, and the gloss will appear to shift as the eye moves along the shutter face. This is especially visible on east-facing walls at 6:30am, when the light is raking across the surface.

We fit every lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter by hand, with a steel straightedge and a feeler gauge, to ensure the joint tolerance is held across the full perimeter. This is not standard practice in the Bangalore residential market; most framers hang shutters and call it done. The difference shows at sunrise.

Specifying lacquered shutters for your next east-facing brief: the checklist

  • Confirm the wall orientation (east, north, south, west) and take a solar angle reading at 6:30am on the proposed handover month. A simple protractor app will suffice.
  • Specify gloss in GU, not as "high gloss" or "semi-gloss." Use 60–70 GU for east-facing, 75–85 GU for north-facing, 50–60 GU for south-facing (to avoid excessive glare at noon), and 70–80 GU for west-facing.
  • Request a sample shutter fitted in the actual frame, in the actual orientation, and observed at the intended time of day before final production.
  • Include a handover protocol that specifies distilled-water rinse and microfibre-cloth wipe. Hard-water deposits will degrade gloss appearance within weeks if this step is skipped.
  • If the project falls in the monsoon window (June–September), reduce the gloss specification by 5 GU to compensate for potential humidity-induced hazing.
  • Insist on fitted installation with ±1mm joint tolerance across all four sides. Hung shutters will show gloss inconsistency at raking angles.

Questions we get asked

Can we use the same gloss specification for all four walls of a wardrobe?

No. East and west walls experience direct solar angles that north and south walls do not. If the wardrobe is island-positioned or has doors on multiple walls, each wall needs its own gloss specification. We have fitted wardrobes where the east door is 65 GU, the north door is 80 GU, the west door is 55 GU, and the south door is 60 GU—all the same lacquer colour, all visible as the same colour saturation from inside the room, but each optimised for its solar exposure.

Does a matte (40 GU) lacquered shutter solve the glare problem on east-facing walls?

No. A matte finish eliminates glare but also flattens colour saturation. On an east-facing wall at 6:30am, a 40 GU lacquered shutter will look desaturated and pale, regardless of the actual pigment depth. The 60–70 GU band is the sweet spot because it preserves colour while managing reflectance.

If we fit the wardrobe in December, will it need to be re-specified in April?

Not if the gloss specification was chosen correctly for the actual site conditions. However, if the December handover was done with a full-gloss (90 GU) specification and the architect observes colour washout in April, the shutters cannot be refinished in place—they must be removed, re-lacquered, and refitted. This is expensive. The right approach is to specify correctly at the design stage, validate with a sample at the 80% stage, and fit once.

Does the hard water in Bangalore affect lacquered-glass differently than soft water?

Yes. Mineral deposits from Cauvery water (TDS 200–300 ppm) will accumulate on any gloss surface, but they are more visible on high-gloss (85+ GU) finishes. A 70 GU surface will show deposits less dramatically and can be cleaned more easily with distilled water. If the site water supply cannot be filtered to <50 ppm TDS, we recommend reducing the gloss specification by 5 units and committing to monthly distilled-water cleaning during the first year.

Can we retrofit a gloss adjustment if the shutter is already installed?

No. Gloss is determined by the lacquer formulation and spray technique; it cannot be adjusted after cure. If the gloss specification is wrong, the shutter must be removed and re-lacquered. This is why the sample validation step at 80% construction is non-negotiable.
