High-gloss (85–90 GU) is acceptable if the client accepts greater seasonal colour shift and you document that expectation. Matte (10–20 GU) is defensible if the design intent is understated presence, but it sacrifices the depth that distinguishes a lacquered finish from paint.
Does the equinox saturation window apply to east-facing and west-facing wardrobes?
No. East-facing and west-facing rooms receive direct solar gain in morning and afternoon respectively, which overrides the seasonal diffuse-light geometry. Their colour appearance is driven by direct-light angle and intensity, not by the equinox. North-facing and south-facing rooms are where equinox geometry matters most. South-facing rooms experience less seasonal shift overall because they receive direct light year-round, which stabilizes the visual appearance.
Can I measure colour saturation on site to verify the equinox window?
Yes, using a spectrophotometer (handheld models are available from lab-supply vendors). Take measurements of the same wardrobe panel at the same time of day in March, June, September, and December. You will see measurable shift in CIE L*a*b* values, with the smallest shift (lowest ΔE) occurring in March and September. This is useful for documentation but is not necessary for specification or handover unless the project specifically requires colour-stability validation.
Does this seasonal window apply to frosted or sandblasted lacquered glass?
