Stand in front of a lacquered-glass wardrobe shutter in a south-facing Bellandur bedroom at 2:45pm and again at 4:15pm, and you're looking at two different pieces. The gloss surface doesn't behave like a matte finish under afternoon sun—it doesn't fade evenly or hold colour through the day. Instead, colour saturation peaks sharply at 3pm when the sun's angle hits the gloss plane at approximately 35 degrees to the normal, then drops off rapidly as the light moves west. For architects and interior designers specifying wardrobes in Bangalore's south-facing homes, this isn't a cosmetic detail. It's a material behaviour that changes how you brief the client on what they'll see, and whether you choose gloss or matte at all.
The geometry of afternoon south light in Bangalore
Bangalore's latitude (13° N) and the seasonal arc of the sun create a specific afternoon light pattern that differs sharply from north-facing or east-facing exposures. In a south-facing room, the sun reaches its highest point at solar noon (around 12:30pm local time), then begins its descent westward. By 3pm, the sun is still high enough to deliver direct light at a shallow angle—roughly 35 to 40 degrees from horizontal—directly onto a vertical south wall.
This angle matters for gloss surfaces. A lacquered-glass finish reflects light specularly—meaning the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. When light hits the surface at a shallow angle, the eye receives a concentrated beam of reflected light. The surface appears to glow, and the colour beneath the lacquer reads with maximum saturation. By 5pm, as the sun moves further west and lower in the sky, the angle steepens; the reflected light no longer reaches the viewer's eye at the same intensity, and the colour appears to flatten and desaturate.
Why saturation peaks at 3pm, not at dusk
The optical physics of gloss under angle
Gloss finishes have a critical angle—the angle at which reflection is most efficient and colour appears most vivid. For lacquered glass in Bangalore's south-facing afternoon light, this critical angle aligns with the sun's position around 2:50pm to 3:20pm. At this window, direct sunlight bounces off the gloss plane and returns to the viewer's eye with minimal scatter. The colour of the lacquer—whether it's a deep emerald, a warm bronze, or a cool blue—reads at its most intense.
By dusk (6pm onwards), the sun has moved so far west and so low that it no longer illuminates the south-facing wall directly. The wall receives only ambient light, scattered from the sky and surrounding surfaces. A gloss finish under ambient light alone reads much flatter and duller than under direct sun. The saturation doesn't hold. Matte finishes, by contrast, scatter light diffusely across all angles, so they maintain more consistent colour saturation throughout the day—but they never achieve the peak intensity of a gloss surface under ideal angle.

Gloss versus matte: when to specify each
Gloss for colour-forward, deliberately lit spaces
If your brief calls for a wardrobe that reads bold and saturated during the hours the client actually uses the master bedroom—typically 7am to 9am and 6pm to 11pm—gloss is defensible. A lacquered-glass shutter with a deep lacquer (like our Deco Noir pattern) will catch morning light from the east and deliver colour intensity. In the evening, artificial lighting will dominate the room, and gloss surfaces reflect interior light sources with the same specular efficiency they use for sun. You're not chasing the 3pm peak; you're designing for the hours when the space is occupied.
Gloss also wins when the wardrobe is positioned perpendicular to the south wall—say, on the east or west wall of a south-facing room. In that geometry, afternoon sun never hits the shutter face directly at the critical angle, so the saturation peak is muted or absent. The gloss finish maintains colour throughout the day without dramatic shifts.
Matte for consistency and monsoon humidity
Matte finishes flatten the saturation peak but deliver steadier colour throughout the day. For architects who want predictability—where the wardrobe reads the same at 10am, 3pm, and 5pm—matte is the safer spec. Matte also performs better in Bangalore's monsoon season (June to September), when humidity climbs to 70-85% and water vapour can condense on gloss surfaces, creating a hazy film that distorts reflection and dulls colour even further.
The hard water in Bangalore (Cauvery-sourced, with TDS typically 200-300 ppm) also matters. If the wardrobe is in a humid ensuite or near a steam shower, mineral deposits can etch a gloss finish over time. A matte surface is more forgiving of water spotting and mineral buildup.
Commissioning for south-facing light: the brief

Patterns and colour under afternoon light

Questions we get asked
Can we specify a gloss finish that doesn't shift colour so dramatically?
No. The shift isn't a defect; it's the physics of how gloss surfaces reflect light at different angles. You can reduce the shift by choosing lighter lacquered colours (which appear less saturated to begin with, so the peak is less obvious) or by choosing matte. But a true gloss finish will always show the peak-and-fade pattern under direct south-facing afternoon sun. What you can do is design around it—position the wardrobe where afternoon sun doesn't hit it directly, or brief the client so the behaviour is expected.
Does the monsoon humidity make gloss worse?
Yes. During monsoon (June to September), when humidity stays above 70%, a gloss surface can develop a condensation haze that further dulls colour and reduces the specular reflection. The 3pm peak becomes less pronounced because the gloss surface is no longer optically clear. If your project is scheduled to handover during monsoon, or if the master is in a naturally humid microclimate (near a water body, or in a basement-adjacent space), matte is the safer spec.
How does artificial lighting interact with the gloss finish at night?
Gloss surfaces are specular reflectors of all light sources, not just sunlight. A ceiling downlight or a bedside lamp will create a bright spot on a gloss wardrobe shutter—a hot reflection that can be visually intrusive. If the lighting design includes directional sources, consider the placement carefully. Matte finishes scatter light diffusely, so they won't create hot spots, but they also won't deliver the visual punch of a gloss surface under accent lighting. This is a design choice, not a material flaw.
Can we apply a UV-protective coating to reduce colour fade over time?
Lacquered-glass wardrobes are already protected by the glass substrate and the lacquer itself. Additional coatings are unnecessary and can dull the finish. Colour fade in lacquered glass is minimal over a five-year period in Bangalore's climate. What you will see is mineral deposit buildup from hard water spray (if the wardrobe is near a bathroom), which requires occasional cleaning. Use a soft cloth and distilled water to avoid streaking.
If we specify matte, does it cost more or less than gloss?
Cost is identical. Matte and gloss lacquered finishes require the same process—the difference is in the lacquer formulation and the application technique. The labour and material cost are the same. Your choice between them should be driven by design intent and light behaviour, not budget.
