Frameless shower glass and the monsoon threshold-creep paradox: why water pools at 15mm reveals when the floor isn't perfectly flat in a Koramangala ensuite
A Koramangala ensuite, 2.4 metres by 1.8 metres, finished in honed granite and fitted with a frameless glass shower panel. The floor was levelled to what the contractor called "site standard"—within 5mm across the span. By the second monsoon, water pooled at the threshold joint line, creeping outward on humid mornings. The glass was not the problem. The floor plane was.
The frameless shower assumes a promise the floor cannot keep
A frameless shower enclosure—whether our 10mm low-iron clear glass with black hardware or any commissioned panel—is a geometric statement. It declares that the floor beneath it is flat. Not approximately flat. Flat to the millimetre, across the width of the reveal, and across the depth of the threshold zone.
When you specify a 15mm reveal (the gap between the bottom edge of the glass and the finished floor surface), you are saying: water will sit on the floor, reach the glass, and stop. The reveal is not a design detail. It is a hydraulic contract. Bangalore's monsoon humidity—June through September, with spray and condensation loading the floor at 70–90% RH—exposes every millimetre of deviation.
On a floor that deviates by 3mm over a 1.2-metre panel width, water does not pool evenly. It pools at the low point. From there, capillary action and gravity work together. Water creeps under the glass, into the joint, and onto the ensuite floor beyond. By the time the architect or designer visits site again, the damage is done: discolouration on the wall, soft plaster at the base, and a warranty claim that points backward to the floor, not the glass.
Why 15mm reveals demand floor tolerance tighter than "site standard"
Most Bangalore contractors work to a floor tolerance of ±5mm over a 3-metre span. This is acceptable for tiled bathrooms with grout lines that absorb minor deviations. It is not acceptable for frameless showers.
The mathematics are simple. A 15mm reveal gives you 15mm of vertical clearance before water touches glass. If the floor slopes 2mm across the 1.2-metre width of a typical shower panel, the low point has only 13mm of clearance. If it slopes another 2mm in the depth direction (front to back), you now have 11mm. Add the surface tension of water under monsoon spray conditions, and the water surface no longer sits flat—it meniscus toward the glass. Creep begins at 12–13mm, not at zero.
The tolerance you need to specify on the RCP and enforce on site
For a frameless shower in Bangalore, specify floor flatness as follows: no deviation greater than 2mm over the full width of the shower panel (typically 1.0–1.5 metres), and no deviation greater than 1.5mm in the depth direction (front edge to back wall). This is ±1mm to ±1.5mm, not ±5mm.
This tolerance must be written into the site specification and verified before the glass is fitted. Use a 2-metre straightedge and a feeler gauge. Mark the high and low points. If the floor does not meet this tolerance, the floor must be re-levelled using self-levelling compound or grind-and-fill before the shower panel is installed.
Do not proceed with glass fitting if the floor has not been certified flat to this standard. The cost of re-levelling (typically Rs. 1,500–2,500 per square metre in HSR Layout or Koramangala) is far lower than the cost of water damage, warranty disputes, and remedial work after handover.
Cauvery water, monsoon spray, and the creep mechanism
Bangalore's water supply—drawn from the Cauvery—carries a TDS (total dissolved solids) of approximately 200–300 ppm. This is moderately hard water. When it evaporates on a granite or marble floor, it leaves mineral deposits. These deposits act as a wick, drawing moisture toward the glass joint even when the floor surface appears dry.
During monsoon months, the ensuite humidity stays above 70% even with ventilation. Water on the floor does not evaporate quickly. Instead, it sits, creeps, and deposits minerals along the joint line. If the floor is not flat, the creep accelerates because water accumulates at the low point and has longer contact time with the joint.
The role of the shower spray pattern
A typical shower spray—from a fixed head or handheld spigot—does not fall vertically. It spreads in a cone, typically 45–60 degrees from vertical. This means water hits the floor at an angle, not straight down. On a flat floor with a 15mm reveal, this angled spray is contained within the shower zone. On an uneven floor, the spray reaches the low point faster and with greater velocity, pushing water toward and under the glass.
This is why frameless showers in Bangalore perform better with a recessed floor pan—a 50mm depression that contains spray and creep within a defined zone. If you are specifying a frameless panel without a pan (a common choice in minimalist design), the floor tolerance becomes non-negotiable.
Joint design and the glass-to-floor interface
The joint between the bottom of the glass and the floor is typically sealed with a silicone or polyurethane sealant. This sealant is not a barrier; it is a bridge. It fills the 15mm gap and creates a surface for water to travel along.
On a flat floor, the sealant sits in a consistent profile—a smooth curve from glass to floor. Water may sit on top of the sealant, but it does not creep into it because the sealant is sealed at both edges (glass and floor). On an uneven floor, the sealant stretches and compresses unevenly. At the low point, it thins. At the high point, it bulges. Water finds the thin section and migrates along the sealant surface, into the wall, and into the substrate.
The sealant itself will fail within 3–5 years on an out-of-tolerance floor, especially in a monsoon climate. Bangalore's humidity cycles—high during monsoon, low during summer—cause the sealant to expand and contract. On a flat floor, this movement is uniform. On an uneven floor, stress concentrates at the transition points, and the sealant cracks.
Site specification: what to write in the schedule
When you commission a frameless shower panel from the atelier, include the following in your specification:
- Floor finish specification: honed granite, marble, or porcelain tile (specify material).
- Floor flatness tolerance: maximum deviation of 2mm across the width of the panel, 1.5mm in the depth direction, verified with a 2-metre straightedge before glass fitting.
- Reveal dimension: 15mm (or specify if different).
- Sealant type: silicone or polyurethane (specify which, and the colour).
- Monsoon precautions: ensure floor is completely sealed and cured for a minimum of 7 days before shower use.
- Drainage: specify if a floor pan or linear drain is included, or if drainage relies on the floor slope alone.
Include a clause that the contractor must provide a floor flatness certificate, signed by the site supervisor, before the atelier schedules the fitting appointment. This single document prevents 90% of post-handover water-creep issues.
The role of the shower hardware in managing water at the threshold
The choice of hardware—whether black stainless steel with grid detailing or brushed brass with the same grid profile—does not affect water management. The hardware secures the glass; it does not seal the joint. However, the profile of the hardware can influence water flow at the bottom edge.
A hardware profile with a sharp internal edge (a 90-degree corner) creates a point where water can collect and redirect. A rounded or bevelled profile allows water to flow smoothly down the glass and onto the floor. If you are concerned about creep, specify hardware with a smooth internal profile, and ensure the bottom edge of the hardware is positioned 2–3mm above the floor surface (not resting on it). This prevents the hardware from bridging an uneven floor and allows the sealant to sit evenly beneath.
Commissioning a frameless shower: the floor inspection checkpoint
When you commission a frameless shower panel from Vetrova, the atelier will schedule a site visit 2–3 weeks before fitting. During this visit, the floor must be inspected and certified. If the floor is out of tolerance, the atelier will recommend remedial work and provide a timeline for re-inspection.
This is not a formality. It is a contractual checkpoint that protects both the architect (by ensuring the floor meets the specification) and the atelier (by ensuring the glass is fitted into a compliant substrate). Skipping this step, or proceeding with fitting on an out-of-tolerance floor, voids the warranty on water-related claims.
In a Koramangala ensuite or any Bangalore project, this checkpoint is essential. The monsoon will test every millimetre of the installation. A flat floor is the foundation of a frameless shower that performs.
Questions we get asked
Can a 10mm reveal work instead of 15mm if the floor is perfectly flat?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it in Bangalore. A 10mm reveal reduces the margin for error to nearly zero. If the floor deviates by even 1mm, creep risk rises sharply. Stick with 15mm as the minimum for monsoon climates. If you want a tighter aesthetic, recessed floor pans or linear drains are better solutions than reducing the reveal.
What if the floor is already laid and is out of tolerance?
Self-levelling compound can correct deviations up to 5mm. For larger deviations, the floor must be ground and re-levelled. Costs in Bangalore run Rs. 1,500–2,500 per square metre. Do this before the glass is fitted. It is always cheaper than remedial work after handover.
Does the choice of floor material (granite vs. marble vs. tile) affect tolerance requirements?
No. The tolerance requirement is the same regardless of material. However, honed granite is more forgiving than polished marble for visual imperfections, and porcelain tile is easier to re-level if needed. Specify the material based on aesthetics and durability, not on tolerance accommodation.
Can a sloped floor (for drainage) work with a frameless shower?
Yes, but the slope must be gradual and consistent. A slope of 1:50 (2cm drop over 1 metre) is acceptable. The key is that the slope must be uniform—no dips, no high points, no direction changes. Verify this with the straightedge test. If the floor slopes in multiple directions, water will pool at the intersection point, and creep will follow.
How often does the sealant at the threshold need to be replaced?
On a flat, in-tolerance floor in Bangalore's monsoon climate, the sealant should last 5–7 years. On an out-of-tolerance floor, it may fail within 2–3 years. When replacement is needed, the old sealant must be completely removed, the joint cleaned and dried, and new sealant applied. This is a maintenance task, not a design failure—but it becomes frequent if the floor is not flat.
