Neither has asked about the water.

Bangalore's groundwater TDS (total dissolved solids) sits between 200 and 300 ppm—hard enough to leave visible mineral residue on frameless glass within weeks of occupancy, especially on horizontal edges and at the joint line where water settles. This is not a defect in the glass or the polish. It is a specification oversight that changes how you finish the edge before installation.

Why Bangalore's water mineralisation matters to your edge spec

Frameless shower glass lives in a wet microclimate. Unlike framed enclosures where water drains predictably along mullions, frameless panels—particularly the bottom edge and any horizontal ledges—trap moisture. Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, and the eastern belt push toward 280–320 ppm, especially during dry season when borewell water is concentrated. If you are specifying a frameless shower in Sarjapur Road or Hebbal, your pre-install water assessment becomes non-negotiable.

A simple TDS meter (₹800–2000, available at any water-treatment supplier) takes 30 seconds to measure. Most architects do not do this. Most builders do not ask. The spec lands on site, the edge is polished to a standard gloss, and the calcium begins accumulating on day one of occupancy.

How hard water changes your edge-finish protocol

The three edge-finish options and their performance in hard water

Once you know your site's TDS, you specify one of three edge protocols:

  • High-gloss polish (10-micron finish): Mirrors the glass surface. Fastest to specify, most economical to execute. Shows calcium buildup visibly within 4–6 weeks of occupancy in Bangalore hard water. Requires monthly maintenance cleaning with a soft cloth and distilled water or white vinegar rinse. Not recommended for frameless showers in TDS above 250 ppm unless the client commits to weekly cleaning.
  • Satin or brushed finish (40–60 micron grit): Diffuses light, masks mineral deposits. The calcium still accumulates, but the cloudy appearance blends with the surface texture. Requires less frequent cleaning. Takes longer to polish on site (adds 2–3 days to the schedule). Adds 8–12% to the edge-finishing cost. Recommended for TDS 250–300 ppm and for clients in Jayanagar, JP Nagar, or BTM Layout where bore water dominates.
  • Honed or matte finish (120+ micron grit): The most forgiving. Mineral deposits are nearly invisible. Requires the least maintenance. Slower to produce, higher cost (15–20% premium). Recommended for TDS above 300 ppm or for any frameless shower where the client has indicated low tolerance for visible deposits.

The joint-line consideration

If your frameless panel has a horizontal ledge or shelf (common in our 10mm frameless shower configurations), the top surface of that ledge is the first place calcium concentrates. A high-gloss ledge top becomes visibly clouded within 3 weeks. Specify a satin or honed finish on the ledge surface even if the vertical faces remain polished. This is a detail that separates a durable handover from a maintenance problem.

What to measure and when

Request a TDS reading from the site's primary water source (municipal supply, borewell, or combination) before the shop drawing is finalised. Measure in the morning and again in the afternoon—TDS fluctuates with usage. If the site has a water-treatment system (softener, RO, or mixed supply), measure both treated and untreated water. Many Bangalore homes use RO for drinking and untreated hard water for bathing; your frameless shower will be exposed to the untreated supply.

Document the TDS reading in your spec. It becomes part of the edge-finish protocol and the maintenance schedule you hand to the client at occupancy.

The handover specification

Once the edge finish is locked (high-gloss, satin, or honed), include this in your site specification sheet:

  • TDS reading (date and time measured)
  • Edge-finish protocol (gloss / satin / honed) and the reason it was chosen
  • Maintenance schedule: frequency of cleaning, recommended cleaning agent (distilled water + white vinegar for high-gloss; plain distilled water for satin or honed), tool (microfibre cloth, never abrasive pads)
  • Warranty exclusion: calcium deposits from hard water are not a manufacturing defect and are not covered under the glass warranty. This protects you and sets client expectations.

The atelier handover: edge finish and durability

When you commission a frameless shower from an atelier, the edge finish is not a cosmetic choice—it is a durability specification. A high-gloss edge on a 10mm panel in Bangalore hard water will show mineral deposits. This is not a failure of the polish. It is the chemistry of your site's water meeting the surface energy of polished glass.

Frameless showers in Bangalore's premium residential zones—Sadashivanagar, Indiranagar, Koramangala—are increasingly specified with satin or honed edges precisely because architects and designers have learned this lesson. The cost difference is 10–15%, but the difference in client satisfaction is 40–50%. A satin edge on a low-iron clear panel with brass hardware reads as intentional, durable, and refined. It does not read as "the glass got dirty."

If you are specifying a textured or tinted glass—fluted or bronze-tint options—the edge finish becomes even more critical. A fluted panel with a high-gloss edge creates a visual mismatch: the face is textured, the edge is reflective. A satin edge on a fluted panel is coherent. It says the finish was chosen, not defaulted.

Questions we get asked

If I specify a high-gloss edge, will the client reject the shower at handover?

Not if you document the water assessment and the edge-finish decision in the specification. Calcium deposits on a high-gloss edge are visible within 4–6 weeks, but they are not permanent. A quick vinegar rinse removes them. The issue arises when the client is not warned. Add a line to your spec: "Edge finish is high-gloss. Bangalore hard water (TDS 240 ppm) will deposit mineral residue on the edge within 4–6 weeks of occupancy. Maintenance: weekly rinse with distilled water and white vinegar." The client then owns the choice and the maintenance.

Can I soften the site water to prevent calcium buildup?

Only if the homeowner installs a whole-house water softener before the shower is handed over. Most Bangalore residences do not. RO systems treat drinking water only, not bathing water. If soft water is a project requirement, specify it in your structural notes and coordinate with the MEP consultant early. Do not assume it will happen. Spec the edge finish for the hard water that will actually be there.

Does a satin edge cost significantly more?

Satin or brushed finishing adds 8–12% to the edge-polishing cost and 2–3 days to the production schedule. For a standard 1200mm × 2000mm frameless panel, the difference is approximately ₹1,500–2,500 in labour and time. For a complex multi-panel configuration (corner entry, return panel, fixed panel), the difference scales with the total edge length. It is a modest premium for a durable finish and is well worth it in Bangalore's hard-water zones.

If the client insists on high-gloss, do I need to specify a maintenance warranty?

No. Calcium deposits from hard water are not a manufacturing defect. Your warranty covers the structural integrity of the glass, the quality of the edge-polish at delivery, and the hardware fit. It does not cover mineral deposits from the site's water chemistry. Document this in your spec and your handover notes. Include a maintenance schedule. This protects you and educates the client.

What if the site's TDS is above 300 ppm?

Specify a honed or matte finish. The cost is higher (15–20% premium), but the durability and maintenance burden are dramatically lower. In Sarjapur Road and eastern Bangalore wards where borewell TDS can exceed 320 ppm, a honed edge is the professional choice. It is also more forgiving in monsoon humidity (June–September), when water sits on the glass longer and deposits more heavily.

Bringing water chemistry into your specification

Frameless shower glass is a precision product. The edge finish is not a detail—it is a durability specification that depends on your site's water chemistry.
