Frameless shower glass and Bangalore's iron-oxide staining: polished vs. bevelled edges under monsoon groundwater mineralisation
A 10mm frameless panel fitted to a Koramangala bathroom in July returns to site in September with a dull, rust-coloured bloom across the polished bevel—not a film, but a pitting pattern that catches the light. The homeowner sees neglect. The designer sees a specification error. Bangalore's groundwater, with TDS readings between 200–300 ppm and iron-oxide saturation that peaks during monsoon recharge, attacks polished glass edges differently than honed ones. The difference is not cosmetic. It is a material choice that determines whether a frameless shower remains optically clean for five years or requires remedial polishing by month three.
Why Bangalore groundwater oxidises polished bevels faster than honed edges
Polished edges are mechanically smooth—a surface prepared by fine abrasives and buffed to a mirror finish. That smoothness is the problem. When iron-oxide-laden water pools in the joint line or runs down a panel during monsoon humidity (June to September, when relative humidity climbs above 85%), the mineral settles on the polished surface. Because polished glass has no micro-texture, the iron oxide adheres directly to the silica matrix. Over weeks, the ferric hydroxide oxidises and forms a rust-coloured compound that is chemically bonded to the glass surface. Polishing removes it temporarily; it returns within 4–6 weeks if the water source is not treated.
Honed edges—finished with 120–180 grit abrasives and left unsealed—retain a subtle micro-texture. This texture breaks the adhesion pathway. Water and minerals still settle, but the oxidation occurs within the micro-pores rather than on a continuous surface. The staining is less visible because it is distributed across a matte plane rather than concentrated on a reflective one. More importantly, the oxide layer does not bond as aggressively to the glass. A single wipe with a microfibre cloth removes it. A honed edge, in Bangalore's groundwater, stays optically cleaner for longer with the same maintenance rhythm.
Specifying edge finish: monsoon retrofit vs. new construction
New construction: when polished bevels work
If the project specifies a water-softening system (reverse osmosis or ion-exchange resin, TDS target below 100 ppm at the point of use), polished bevels remain viable. The atelier has fitted our 10mm frameless shower with low-iron clear glass and black hardware to new-build projects in Whitefield and Sadashivanagar where RO systems were installed in the wet core during construction. In those cases, the groundwater never reaches the glass. Polished edges stay polished. Warranty is five years against pitting.
If no water treatment is specified, do not spec polished bevels. This is non-negotiable on Bangalore projects. The cost of a polishing service call (₹3,000–₹5,000 per panel, plus travel) exceeds the cost difference between a polished and honed edge at the point of manufacture.
Monsoon retrofits: honed edge is the default
A retrofit—a bathroom renovation in an existing home where groundwater is already in use—should default to honed bevels. The designer cannot control the water source retroactively. Assume TDS of 200–300 ppm. Assume monsoon humidity will exceed 80% for four months. A honed edge finish costs 8–12% less than polished and performs measurably better under those conditions. The visual difference is minimal when the glass is clean; it becomes significant only when comparing a stained polished edge to a honed one that wipes clean.
Retrofit projects in HSR Layout, Indiranagar, and JP Nagar—all high-density residential areas with older groundwater infrastructure—should routinely specify honed edges on frameless panels. The atelier has fitted over 40 such projects in these micromarkets in the past three years. None have returned with pitting complaints. Polished-edge retrofits in the same cohort generated three call-backs.
Joint tolerance and edge finish interaction
The edge finish also affects how water sits in the joint line. A polished bevel creates a sharper transition at the glass-to-hardware interface. Water pools slightly longer in that acute angle. A honed edge, with its softer micro-texture, allows water to sheet off more quickly. This is a minor factor—perhaps 5–10 seconds of drainage difference—but over a monsoon season, it compounds. The polished edge experiences more static water contact time per cycle. More contact time means more opportunity for oxidation to begin.
Specify joint tolerance at 2–3mm for both finishes. The tolerance accommodates site dimensions and allows the hardware to absorb minor variations in plumb. The edge finish does not change this. What changes is the maintenance protocol: a honed edge can tolerate a longer interval between cleaning cycles without visible staining.
Maintenance and the five-year outlook
A polished-edge frameless shower in Bangalore requires cleaning every 7–10 days during monsoon months to prevent oxide bloom. A honed edge requires the same frequency, but the staining is less visible if the interval extends to 14 days. For residential projects where the homeowner is not obsessive about bathroom maintenance, this difference is material. It is the difference between a specification that works and one that generates complaints.
If the homeowner is willing to commit to a weekly cleaning routine with a pH-neutral glass cleaner and microfibre cloth, polished edges are acceptable even in a retrofit. But that commitment must be documented in the handover notes. Most homeowners will not maintain it. Design for the user who does not read the manual.
After five years, a honed edge will show a subtle patina—a very light dulling of the micro-texture—if water quality remains unchanged. This is not staining; it is the expected wear pattern of a honed surface. A polished edge, by contrast, will show visible pitting if it has not been regularly polished. The pitting is permanent. Polishing cannot restore the original surface once oxide has chemically bonded.
Specifying with confidence: the atelier's approach
When a designer commissions a frameless shower panel from the atelier, the specification form asks two questions: Is water treatment installed? What is the monsoon maintenance protocol? The answers determine the edge finish. If the designer is uncertain, the default is honed. This is not a limitation. It is a specification that works in Bangalore's climate.
The atelier also offers a hybrid approach for high-end projects: polished bevels on the upper half of a tall panel (above 1.2m, where water contact is minimal) and honed edges on the lower half and joint lines (where water pools). This reduces the visual impact of potential staining while protecting the most vulnerable zones. It costs 4–6% more than a full honed specification but addresses both aesthetics and durability.

Questions we get asked
Can we polish a honed edge if the homeowner changes their mind later?
Yes, but not to the original specification. A honed edge can be polished after installation, but the result is a softer sheen than a factory-polished bevel because the micro-texture is not fully uniform after hand-finishing. The cost is ₹2,500–₹4,000 per panel. If there is any doubt about the final aesthetic, specify polished at the outset and commit to a water-softening system or aggressive maintenance protocol.
Does the tint of the glass affect staining visibility?
Yes. Clear glass shows iron-oxide bloom most clearly because the oxidation is visible against a transparent background. Bronze-tinted or fluted glass (like our Classic Flute with black hardware) masks the staining better. If the budget allows and water quality is uncertain, choose a tinted or textured glass. The edge finish becomes less critical because the surface finish of the glass itself provides visual camouflage.
What if the site has soft water already?
Soft water (TDS below 100 ppm) is rare in Bangalore. If the property has an RO system or sits in a micromarket with unusually soft groundwater (unlikely in HSR, Koramangala, or Indiranagar), polished bevels are safe. Confirm the water quality with a TDS meter reading before specifying. Do not assume softness based on the locality. Groundwater varies by depth and season.
Is honed edge less durable than polished?
No. Honed and polished are both mechanically stable finishes. Neither is more or less durable as a surface treatment. The difference is in how they interact with Bangalore's mineral-heavy groundwater. Honed is more resistant to visible staining; polished is more prone to oxide adhesion. Both will last the life of the building if the water source is treated or if maintenance is consistent.
Can we specify polished edges with a warranty against pitting?
The atelier offers a three-year pitting warranty on polished bevels only if an RO system is installed and the site TDS is confirmed below 100 ppm at the point of use. This requires a written commitment from the builder or homeowner. Without that commitment, polished edges carry a standard five-year warranty against manufacturing defects, but not against oxidative staining. Honed edges carry a five-year warranty against visible staining under normal Bangalore conditions.
Commissioning your frameless shower specification
Talk to the atelier about your site's water quality and maintenance expectations. Bring a TDS reading if one is available. Specify honed edges as the default on Bangalore retrofits. If polished bevels are required for aesthetic reasons, budget for either a water-softening system or a quarterly professional cleaning service. The choice between these two finishes is not about preference—it is about designing for the actual climate and water conditions of Bangalore.
